At low wind speeds, my Navman 3100 wind display is erratic. It reads true for a few minutes, then for a few minutes it reads garbage. It tends to cycle between these two modes. At above ~10kts apparent, it seems to work fine all the time. The masthead wand (anemometer) and instrument are new replacements. The only thing that I haven't replaced is the mast wiring, which is new as of 2005. What would cause such odd behavior? What is the protocol between the masthead and the instrument? Is it NavBus? What are the electrical properties? Is this an analog circuit? Could there be some sort of grounding issue? If there is an intermittent connection on the wire, why would it phase in and out while at the dock and not moving, but then be fine and steady underway? Any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated. -JK

If you could be a little more definitive

it would help. At low wind speeds, my Navman 3100 wind display is erratic. It reads true for a few minutes, then for a few minutes it reads garbage. What flavor garbage? just random numbers or a bad display?

I installed one around the same time and the wind indicator is all over the place. It worked well for the first season but now I am having a lot of trouble with it. The wind speed appears okay but the direction is way off. No matter how I adjust it, it does not read correct. After a call to Navman, they said to send it to them. He thought that the display head had gone bad and that the wiring and anemometer were probably okay. We'll see.

Displays '--' when wind speed is low

Both wind speed and wind direction show as '--' when the wind speed is low.

Tony - I am also expereincint erratic readings and have been told that the likel problem is the masthead transducer. I was told parts were no longer available and now that the Navman name/product has been merged into Simrad by Navco all Navmen equipment is out of warranty? Curious to learn if you have you received a replacement part? If so form where and most importantly is it working!
