Navionics Question

I downloaded Navionics the other day. It took so much memory that I got warnings on my Android phone that the phone memory was being exceeded, so I moved the Navionics folder to my SD card.

When I first tried it, before I moved the folder, the depth contours appeared.

They no longer appear.

This is for the 14 day free trial.

I have since removed the Navionics folder from my SD card and re-installed the charts with a smaller area of charts.

No contours appear now.

Any ideas?

Do you have the "route start menu" buttons at the bottom? Also a light blue button with a little lightning symbol in it? Just above the arrow button for your present position. If you poke the light blue one, you get three choices of a chart type. If the trial is like the "real one"...

What i just described is on my ipad. Looking at the website pix, the android tablet is the same but the phone version may be different. It seems You have to find the option for sonar charts. Avionics website sux and always has. I dont think the free trial includes CA for the Navionics + chart. If you decide to go with it download from the app store. There is a US/CA HD chart and it's about $55 and free updates for a yr. I'm happy with it. Saved my bacon several times when plotter froze up in fog coming back from the Broughtons...

Sounds like you need to re set your "level of detail" Like most charplotter you can filter out what you don't want to see, Your biggest problem may be finding an easily referenced owner's manual. When I installed Navionics a few years back... the trial version was the same. There were upgrades available... for instance a set of windows that show speed and direction data at the top of the screen.. it was like $5.00... worth it, I thought.,,, that may have been on the tablet version though.... can't remember.

I used to use Navionics but didn't like their charts. But I do remember that they accessed different types of charts. So I am wondering if when you moved over to the SD card the charts went there also (basically, there is a software pointing issue). See which chart you are accessing. I think there was the Navionics chart, NOAA chart, and one more I cannot remember. I could be mistaking this app for another one I used.

My contention is, if the contour lines where there once before, they will be there again. Contour lines a paid chart do not make.

it was coming but not quit yet months ago.
A friend has Nav2 go and loves it and trying to decide which to get.

Thanks for you input and ideas.

This is a the trial version. I do NOT want to buy anything at all. I simply want to see if this software works for me.

I am no longer in California, I'm in B.C. Vancouver Island.

I am a neophyte with the danged phone, too. :)

So, how do I remove the whole Navionics trial app and start over again - may b e the simplest.

Mark, I do NOT get what you mentioned on my app, sonar charts are not available for the trial version. I do NOT get three choices either. But I do remember seeing "Govt Charts" on that screen before I F-ed it up myself by moving the folders around.

Bruce, if the charts "went there" they are gone now because I deleted the folder on the SD card. BUT: Navionics TRIAL version allows me to continue to download charts and update them daily, which I've done. They should be somewhere, but there is no Navionics folder on my SD card anymore.

Maybe a fresh start would help. I actually downloaded a manual for my (new-to-me Smart Phone - Android) phone (!) (RTFM!?!) but it doesn't cover removing apps.

Navionics does not show up as an app on File Manager, but it does show up as an icon on my home screen and appears, without the contours, when I tap the Navionics icon on the home screen.

I'm very computer literate, but this phone is beginning to beat the heck out of me! :)

Thanks again.

Go to SETTINGS
Then select APP MANAGER (or it might be called APPS)
Find Navionics in the list of apps in the DOWNLOADED tab
Select the app and press UNINSTALL
If you don't see it in Downloaded, move over to the other tabs and look there.

Stu,

I've got Navionics (USA and Canada) on both my Nexus 7 " tablet and my android (motorolla Moto G (3rd gen) phone and I like it a lot. It works fine with no glitches on both....until...

I read your post and was looking through the setup menu on my phone to try to see what your issue might be. I just happened to turn on "fishing view", when bad things started happening...the app crashed immediately. It also crashed every time I tried to restart it. I tried turning phone off and on, dumping the cash and app data, reinstalling the app twice all to no avail. I sent in a problem report on Navionic's site, and will probably hear back from them shortly. In the meantime, I noticed that even though I uninstalled the app, there was still a "navionics" folder on my phone among all the other app folders (I used "OI file manager" to find it...OI is an app / file manager I have installed on my phone...just cause I like that one...you can browse the files with which ever file manager you like). I deleted the navionics folder, reinstalled the app, and it is working fine again. I suggest you do the same, if you're having issues even after reinstalling.

That said, I've found Navionics to be pretty bullet proof. I like their charts. I also have the Plan2nav app installed. I thought I might like that one better, as it has Active Captain built into it. I do find it useful for planning, but like the Navionics charts better, so I use that one on the water.

Stu, try what Brian D says. If that doesn't work, or doesn't appear, here is how I uninstall my apps.

Go to the Playstore. Find the app you want to uninstall. Select it, like you are going to download it. Once it is selected, there should be two options at the top of the screen - one (on the right side) to "OPEN" the app ('cause you already have it), and the other on the left or middle to "Uninstall" the app. Click on uninstall.

To confirm a successful uninstall, I then navigate away from the store, close all my apps, go back in to the Playstore, and find the app again. When selected, it will NOT give you the option to uninstall, only the option to download.

More ideas for your issue...

For chart detail to show up, you need to download the charts for the areas you're interested in and zoom in enough for the detail to show up. I'm sure you already know that cause you mentioned loading the charts in your post.

It's likely though, that when you moved the app to your sd card, it did not move the Navionics folder that has all the chart info in it too. So now it doesn't know where to look for the chart info you downloaded. FWIW, some apps don't work well running from an sd card. Maybe Navionics is one of these. You could try uninstalling the app, deleting the Navionics folder (as I mentioned in the post above). Then reinstall the app. Then move it over to your sd card, if you want. Then download the charts you want. Maybe then, the app will put them where it can find them.

As far as moving the app over to the sd card... You mentioned that you got low memory warnings. Moving the app over to a card probably won't do anything for that. That might help only if you didn't have enough storage space on the phone. More memory can only be freed up by shutting down some of the apps that are running in the background. You might try that first when you reinstall the Navionics app. Maybe it's just time to upgrade to a faster, snazzier phone :)

Thanks, Brian, that worked.

ses, thanks, too.

I tried reinstalling it but it said there was not enough room. I cleared the cache and I'll try it again. But I have to get to the boat. Since I moved here, weather is very important. It's clear today, rain coming, so I have to trace down a leak.

I do see that on Settings, App, there's a way to move it to the SD card. I also should have no music on my phone, it should all be on my SD. More connections to my computer to trace this carp down.

More later, thanks again to all.

Unfortunately, manufactures of phones these days are cutting the use of external memory, and, reducing the size of internal memory. All this to force the consumer to use the cloud. Just another way to have more control over who is using what. This sailor will purchase and use only phones that support external memory and have a minimum of 16GB of internal memory. Kinds of limits my choice, but that is my choice.

And, yes, Sesmith is correct, you will have to clean up your uninstall. Use file manager to delete the Navionics folder.

Kind of a hijack, but...
I was using Navionics on my Android tablet and it was working great even when there was no WiFi. Now it seems it won't start unless I have WiFi. It SHOULD work when there's no WiFi, right? (provided I have downloaded the appropriate charts beforehand)

Druid, check your LOCATION settings and if you have AGPS or Wifi selected, deselect them. Select only GPS and it should work. May take more time to acquire the satellites, but once locked...

To confirm GPS connectivity, I would recommend GPS Status for Android. Not sure what is available for Apple.

You should be able to get the chart without wifi or gps enabled. Wifi doesnt get you anything. However with gps enabled, Apple seems to think wifi increases accuracy of gps. I dont really see that.....

Stu,
you should be able to move, at least, the data (I assume that charts are treated as data) to the SD card (from Application Manager or from Storage - both in Settings). You might be able to move some of the App to SD Card, as well.
However, you have to install it first, i.e. you need to have enough storage (memory) available before installing.
Your music can be anywhere, so move it. Same with pictures and movies.
Keep in mind that if you have an older phone (less RAM (the memory, not storage; we are talking 1-4 GB)), you may have a problem with too many apps loaded. Each app loads a "stub" into memory and you need some free for running apps. If this happens you should get some error messages and/or certain things won't be happening (e.g. you calendar won'r synch).

good luck
Marek

I run Navionics on my vessel MFD. On my mobile devices the lean functional capabilities of Transas iSailor works better. Reliably and hassle free. Where ever I am. Just saying.

Update:

I uninstalled the app.

I disabled some other apps I don't use and cleared a lot of caches.

I reinstalled Navionics. It "remembered me" and I only have 9 days left of the 14 day trial.

I tried to move it to the SD card but it didn't let me do that.

I do not like this thing. :)

For those mentioning "iSomething" apps, this is an Android phone. 4GB basic memory, 32 GB SD card, only used less than half of it for music and photos, which I've cleaned out and minimized.

Still no contours, typeface is too small to read depths.
