Good day, I have been trying to interface a Garmin 12 GPS with my Navico WP300 CX with limited success. At waypoint change, the pilot takes for ever to steer to the next waypoint and gets significantly off track. I monitored the GPS NMEA interface for clues and I changed various options on the GPS unit as well as gain on the pilot. Does anybody succesfuly use a Navico pilot in GPS mode?

Download Garmin fixes.

Bert: My first suggestion is to go to the Garmin site and download any fixes for your GPS. Then contact Simrad for their advice if this does not do the job.

A simple question

On Raymarine units, when you arrive at a waypoint you have to push a button to tell the autopilot to advance to the next waypoint. Otherwise it just keeps on the same course. Could it be the same thing on the Simrad unit?

arrival to waypoint button

Derek, No, there is no button to push... the pilot will proceed to the next waypoint on the route. The problem is that it gets off track for a while before steering to the next waypoint

SW rev

Thanks Steve, I do have the latest version available. Unfortunately, I have to deal with 2 providers here, Simrad and Garmin.

Maybe I'm not understanding....

... your reply, but on page 10 of the User Manual for the WP30 (from the Simrad website) I read "...On arrival at the target waypoint an intermittent alarm will sound. As a safety feature to avoid an unexpected course change, the next waypoint will not be automatically loaded until the NAV key is pressed. When the vessel reaches the final waypoint, the Wheelpilot will continue its current course under Compass Mode..." which implies that you do have to press a button to switch to the next waypoint.

Derek is correct

You need to be in control of autopilot thus it will only beep and wait for you to hit the Nav button so it will change course. Otherwise folks might not see what the autopilot is turning toward (rocks, markers, other boats, etc.)

nav signal

Derek, the WP300CX documentation sais the same thing actually. However, I get the signal only at the end of the route, i.e. at the last waypoint. Maybe I should play with the arrival alarm option on the GPS to trigger the WP alarm, and then push the NAV button to get back on track? I will give it a try next weekend and get back to you. If you think of something else, please let me know Thanks again

Nav signal

Derek, Well, I tried several arrival alarm settings from .1 nm to 5 and I cold not get my pilot to emit a signal, except for the last waypoint of the route. Any other idea?

Wish I could help...

Bert, I'm a bit out of my league here since I have never used a Simrad autopilot. I did check the NMEA sentences that the GPS12 sends, they should be satisfactory (according to the WP30 manual all it needs is GPRMB and GPRMC). BTW - although I liked the specs of the WP30 I bought the ST4000+ because it has a full display and it's easy to see what's going on at any time. The WP30 seemed to be a "black-box". I will defer to Simrad owners - good luck! Derek
