Wrong direction!

Here I am planning on taking my H37C OUT the Erie Canal to the Hudson. :) But chart expenses are a very real issue. A previous owner left large detailed charts aboard for the Great Lakes. That same level of detail for the East Coast would be several hundred dollars. My knowledge of electronic charts is very limited but they also seem very expensive. And there are so many options. Practical Sailor(link below) did one article but it's already two years old. Be interesting to see what kind of advice you get. P.S. Go to this Sailnet site and type in "charts" in the "Article" search box. Lots of info: http://www.sailnet.com/collections/articles/index.cfm

Chart swapping?

I have heard of sailors who were going in opposite directions exchanging charts with each other along the way. For example, if Steve is headed north to the Great Lakes but has charts for the east coast, and Ed is headed south to Florida with his Great Lakes charts, then they can exchange charts somewhere in the middle, and have good coverage for the entire area with only one set of charts. I'm told that this is a pretty popular option among world cruisers... --JDB

Garmin.

Garmins has (or did have) a program where you can "rent" chips for their systems. You buy them and return with in set periods of time for credits (75%, etc.) Saw it on their web site although it took a little searching.
