Nav Lights Placcement

I have concerns about my nav lights. Specifically, the 120 degree white at the stern. It is mounted right near my outboard which must obscure it on nighttime sails. I've seen some lights on poles, but they all seem to be 360s for motorboats. Any ideas for raising a stern light?

mine is mounted on the stern pushpit railing, which raises it above anything that would obstruct it's view.

Friend of mine with a Catalina 25 has significant obstruction problems with the factory mounting on his, I've often suggested he replace his light with one on the pushpit rail.

You'll need to create one custom unless you can find one that fits your needs.

We have moved ours to the radar pole due to dinghy davits..

Let your little light shine...

Our factory stern light was on a little ss plate welded on the stern rail. I was concerned that someday someone might damage their hand on it when climbing up out of a dinghy. When we had some welding and polishing done on the rails that mounting went away and reappeared on the radar pole, just under the radar dome.
Much easier to see now, with no side glare into the rear of the cockpit at night.

Maine, love that cute crew! Does she have her own dinghy yet?

On my motorboat, the PO mounted the stern light on top of the motor. He actually cut a hole in the top of the cowling and mounted the light on top, ran the wires down with all the other electrical stuff. It actually works gerat.

Now, it is an all-around light, and it turns with the outboard. Do you turn your outboard, or leave it stationary and use the boat's rudder?

I generally steer with the tiller, but the motor can and does turn.

I was looking again today at the pole mounted lights. I think I'll have to go look at one of the 360s and see if the all-around can be removed and replaced with a 135.
