The whole Patrick O'Brien series

also known as the Maturin Aubrey series. 14 books, I think. None better. O'Brien also has a couple of other books and a short stiry book or two. All good. When I lived in Port Townsend th library had to stock two or three whole sets to keep up with demand. Wind in the Willows is not just a kids book. Read it out loud to your friends and lovers. Especially the Water Rat quotes, and the deep sea rat chapter. Riddle of the Sands is a classic war spy boat book. A must read. Tristan Jones books are a step below the above, but I think they're worth the time. It may be that he exaggerates a bit, but he spins a good yarn. I put Hornblower books below Tristan Jones, and I expect some fans to jump on me for that. I have read most of them. They are a bit stilted, lots of flag waving, if you like that sort of thing. Go ahead and thrash me guys. I asked for it. John Steinbeck wrote a boat book about a marine biology trip with the fellow who was the inspiration for Doc in Cannery Row. Log of the Sea of Cortez, or something like that. Hilarious and wonderful book. There is nobody like Steinbeck.

Adm Nelson

Adm Nelson's victory at Trafalgar is a great read, if you are into history. Several book options on it... and another big vote for P. O'Brien's books... B

Dana's book is the best ever done about the life of the common sailor in his time(awful) and has great detail about early ports and landfalls.

I heard…..

…if you’re on a costal cruise with that Dixon fellow, you don’t so much “turn in” as “tip over” also, I heard the Inner Harbor Club guys eat their dead….. (just kidding Dick, slow night, eh…) Ferg

Reading

I like the Dudley Pope, Ramage series. Have also read the Alexander Kent's, Bolitho series and CS Forester's Hornblower series but the Pope books are better IMHO. For nonfiction there are lots of good choices. Just go to the Boating section in any Barnes and Nobles and take your pick.

Slocum and Gulliver

Sailing Alone Around the World is classic travel, sailing literature. Personally, Joshua Slocum is an inspiration for self-sufficiency, genius, and resourcefulness (all noble qualities for a cruiser). It is short enough that you can get mostly through it, if not complete it, with some downtime before turning in. I like Gulliver's Travels, too. Interestingly enough, among the many objects of its satire are published travelogues, such as Slocum's. It has a nice counterveiling presence while providing those fictional wanderings of the mind that can be refreshing at least from time to time.

irving johnson

And if the aerobatics of living aloft amaze you, square riggers, or both while enduring treacherous weather and seas, then Irving Johnson's short piece, The Peking Battles Cape Horn, aka Round the Horn in a Square Rigger, will be a great read.

Seafaring Trilogy by Hal Roth

Great must read. Learned a lot from it about cruising. His wife Margaret is equally impressive. I've read the first two installments and looking forward to the third. In the first he and his wife circumnavigated the pacific coast. In the second is the rounding of Cape Horn. The third I just started. Enjoy, Frank PS: A lending library at this site would be great. I'd be willing to donate my books when done.

Another One

Although he is not a classical author, Buffett's book "A Salty Piece of Land" is a good one. "A Pirate Looks at Fifty" is OK, too. Happy reading!!
