That’s very cool and very interesting!

Here is an honest question, is this a southern thing? I sail all over the country and never see this in northern states. I’m proud of Minnesota but it never occurred to me to fly the MN state flag while sailing. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen one for sale. However unless I’m racing the stars and bars is always up.
I don’t know if it’s a Southern thing or not. We see our state flag everywhere. My in-laws from NY didn’t even know what theirs looked like until I flew it while they were sailing with us. Some flags are more recognizable than others. TX, SC, NM and AK come to mind quickly. The ones that are basically the state seal on a background don’t seem to be as instantly recognizable.

The Alabama state flag only resembles the International Code Flag “Victor.” Code flags are square; the AL state flag is clearly rectangular, etc.

Regarding the flying of the state flag here in CA on sailboats, I don’t see it often but I sometimes fly it myself. The US flag is flown from the starboard stern; the state flag from the starboard spreader unless the Club burgee is there, in which case it is flown from the port spreader. Flying at the starboard spreader, however, is the same courtesy position where a foreign flag is flown on a US-flagged vessel when in that country. When I sail to into Mexico, which is not often, I fly the Mexico national flag there. I imagine folks going into Canada may fly the Canada national flag similarly. So, I don’t see why a US-flagged vessel should not fly a state flag in the same position if so desired, or a Canada-flagged vessel a province flag.

Dit dit dit Dah... Victory is the Red X. Beethoven's Fifth or No speed.

But Mississippi flag shows the History of the State. We have many Confederate soldiers burial grounds and Jefferson Davis was from MS.

Recently MS opened this to show we have moved from the dark ages of our past.

In truth, Mississippi was the birthplace of the Civil Rights movement.;)
Also this every spring.

We had a German exchange student stay with us once. When he first arrived, he expressed his surprise at how freely the american flag was displayed on private property. Apparently, such overt nationalism is discouraged in Germany.

My former sailing partner (Pia) was German and moved to the US in her 20s. She noticed the same thing. BTW, Nationalism is NOT a great thing (particularly in Germany for obvious historical reasons)... Patriotism is a much more desirable trait.

Brings back a fond memory. When we were racing we always showed the flag when sailing out to the course and up to the 5 minute signal. Then it was such a pleasure to stow the flag, then show it again after we crossed finish line. A matter of pride and seamanship. Ah..., those were the days....:)

Oh God, another New Yorker with a "Confederate flag problem."
Comments like these really serve no productive purpose. If you consider referring to the US Flag by the nickname of the flag of a rebellious group of states that favored slavery, a "Confederate flag problem" then yes I guess that I am a New Yorker with such a problem, even though I hail from South Carolina.

The Stars and Bars refers to the Confederate Flag, I assume that @Jackdaw made a simple error in referring to the flag he flies and I gave him an opportunity to clarify his comment.

In my statement I am referring to the attempt to erase History good and bad. We learn from history and the mistakes that were made. Now we can get back to which flags we fly. I always fly the Conch Republic Flag.
