Starting to look at used Hunters in the 33-36' range and it seems the rubber rub rails on every one are stained, cracked, torn or really faded. It pretty much ruins the boat's appearance. My questions are (1) other than buying a different brand, can this be prevented? (2) can the rails be effectively cleaned, or is cleaning a major, monthly project that is more trouble than it is worth? and (3) any idea of the cost to replace? Thanks! Steve

Hard to replace

They're brittle and hard to remove, and murder to put new ones on. I've tried everything over the years and come up with this result... Comet with green scrubber. Use hot water. Follow by waxing, in my case with Island Girl. Look at optimistically. Better that the rubrail take all those dings that the fiberglass. Down in Charleston, boats coming into slips take a beating from the wicket current.

I've used "Purple" industrial cleaner &degreaser

You can get it at Home Depot. Just spray it on wait a couple of minutes, lightly brush and then rinse off. It works great, though as Rick suggestes it would be best not done in the water. Oh and wear gloves, I found out the hard way that it will take ALL the oils out of your hands. My hands looked like an alligator skin for a few days after.

Acetone

If the rails are really bad try Acetone, it cuts through anything but wear gloves. I used it after the boat sat for 3 yrs. before I bought it. Now the rails look new. Ken
