I am planning a trip from Naples to Key West. Does anyone have any advice, recommendations or suggestions? If you've made a similar trip I would like your thoughts!

Naples to Key West

Watch your weather, there is no place to duck into between the two. A strong sou'easterly can whip up Florida bay a bit. Study the approach to keywest before you go, it can be tricky in the dark, more than one poor sole has found the jetty. Good Luck

A nice over nighter

The trip is a nice over nighter and will take from 20 to 24 hours. It is 120 miles or so from the Ft Myers beach light. As mentioned in the previous response there is nowhere to hide in the event of some nasty weather so a good weather window is a good thing. Also, mentioned was the NW channel and the jetties on both side. Respect them. Do not short cut the channel. The channel is long and will take some time to transit but a high tide short cut may cause big trouble. An east wind can cause the Florida Bay and the NW Channel to be a little ugly. Call the Key West Express in Marco Island for the latest weather and sea conditions. If you have time, a good trip is down via Little Shark River, Marathon and then Key West. We've done Ft Myers, Key West,Marathon, Little Shark, Marco Island and Ft Myers in 6 days but prefer to do it in 2-3 weeks. Have a good trip.

east to west

I agree with both letters, plan the weather and watch for the jetty at the entrance of the NW channel, it is submerged during much of the tide and only marked by breaking waves and a yellow light/marker at the entrance. A night entry is not advised, I've done it once in a storm and do NOT recommend it. This time of year you can hop on the tail end of a cold front and have a rocket-ship ride down but if the wind shifts to the east (like it tends to do south of Cape Sable) you'll roll beam to beam. If you plan to go anyplace from Key West than I'd recommend starting at your north east most spot and sail down the island chain. The winds tend to stay from the east/northeast this time of year. Knowing that, your run from Key West back to Naples will be a joy with a stiff E/NE wind. Couple words of caution, the shrimpers and fisherman don't always use proper lights so at night you'll have no idea what type of vessel you see or what it is doing, just stay clear. The cruise ships also run this area and they haul ass, just stay clear well in advance. I hail the cruise ships on the VHF and make sure they see me, some do and some don't. Good luck and enjoy.
