Sign -A-Rama

I went to a local Sign-A-Rama franchise after looking at BoatUS and other ads in sailing magazines. They were very helpful and 25% cheaper than anything else. My daughter and I installed the lettering in about 10 minutes and 2 years later it looks like new.

best or cheapest....

I suppose the cheapest way would be those letters from the hardware store. I purchased my graphics from Boat US. They were very affordable, nice looking and fairly easy to apply. Good Luck!! -- Jeremy

Made my own

After blowing up the letters using the font I wanted on the computer, I traced them onto good vinyl sticky-back shelf-lining paper. Don't know how long they will last, but doing fine so far. Cheapskates, unite!

cheap?best?

The two don't mix. Sorry. The cheapest is with a pencil. You can borrow that The best is to hire a sign/graphic artist to paint it on. There are many vinal letters and companys willing to sell you varieties of designs so you can do it yourself. Keep it up, Ctskip

DIY best and cheapest

I'd have to agree with Bob, blow up the name and graphics you want on a computer, proint them up, transfer them to stiff paper, cut them out, pencil in some construction lines on the stern and then trace an outline of each letter. Then just paint them on using a sutable paint and good artist's brush. You can do all kinds of stuff like shadows in contrasty colors, graphics, multi-color, mixed fonts and sizes. Basicly your imagination is the limit.

Sign shop

I agree with Bruce; my friends went to a next-day sign shop and got what they wanted on the transfer surface. The trick is to wet the boat surface first with soapy water or window cleaner and then you can smooth it out and move it around for a few seconds to get it right. His looks totally professional after many years.

I found this guy...

I had hoped to find a good deal on lettering at the Strictly Sail show in Miami; nothing doing. I guess they were all over at the main vendor display away from the sailboats. Anyway, the Admiral later drags me to an indoor flea market near Ft. Lauderdale. There was a vinyl lettering guy there who made up two lines of letters (boat name 4" letters and port of call 2" letters) for $23! Real easy to put on. Sweet. About 1/2 to 1/3 the cost of the websites I had researched.

...www.overtons.com They can make any type lettering you need. The last boat name I got from them was still looking new, after being on my boat (boat kept in the water) for six years.

With a marker.

According to the criteria exposed in your question the utilization of a marker is the answer. You can almost permanenetly put the name of your boat on it in less than 60 seconds. What is a better way than that. Practice your caligraphy and leave the task of painstakingly taking it off to the future owner. Computer cut vynil lettering is the most practical.
