Hi,
I bought a 1988 Capri 18 and the previous owner did not have a name for her. My daughter and I have come up with a name and want to find out the "proper" way to name our boat. Is there a resource somewhere out there for that? Thanks!

You can google (boat names) or sit back and it will eventually name itself.

As far as a ceremony, alcohol perhaps should be involved. Kid Wine (white grape juice) for the kids, and your poison of choice for you. Someone dressed as a pirate would help, and an appropriate poem of dubious origin would be nice too. Make it a fun event, invite lots of people to it.

You will need a Priest, and Shaman, An Iman and a Witch Doctor and a Rabbi to preside over the naming of your boat else the gods, all of them starting with Neptune will be angry. How many libations you pour into yourself and your friends must take into consideration whether or not you pour a libation to the gods.. So when you pull the cork splash just a bit on the earth in honor of the gods you wish not to anger. ;)

Edit to add: Since we are but two weeks from the solstice it would be fitting to have a Druid present and the drink should be mead. Don't forget Valkyrie the Nordic goddess of war.

Google "John Vigor renaming" for the proper naming ceremony.

Watch the next TV show of "Sponge Bob". My grandkids liked "Squidward". Feel free to use any of these carefully kid screened names.
Enjoy the adventure.

Careful you don't come off looking like the judge in Caddyshack.
Excellent advice! One of my favorite scenes in one of my favorite movies...
It's easy to grin when your ship comes in
and you've got the stock market beat
But a man worthwhile is one who can smile
When his shorts are too tight in the seat

I name thee, the "Flying Wasp."

SPALDING, GET YOUR FOOT OFF THE BOAT!!

I like having unique names. Nothing would irritate me more than to see a boat with the same name as mine. I know that it could happened no matter how unique the name is....but there are probably 1,000,000 boats named Southern Cross.

Why is it that in a culture with deep Abrahamic religious roots or declared atheistic beliefs, there is so much concern that Roman god Neptune might take offense to "improper naming" protocols?

On the other hand, a naming ceremony is a great excuse to gather with family and friends!

Due to a lack of time, I just took off the old name and put the new name on.

Instead of painting the name, we gave 12 year vinyl lettering a try, with satisfying results. Went to the closest graphic sign shop, which provided us with a plethora of lettering styles and colors (went with a blue to match the "sapphire" hull stripes), and it was about a $100. Even had extra "samples" in case of a screw-up.
