Two important and related questions -

1) Which is better for boat name lettering, paint or vinyl?

I'm leaning towards vinyl after some amount of reading online but am open to persuasive agruments in favor of paint...

and...

2) What constitutes a proper 'naming party' or christening ceremony (besides plenty of libation for all attendees)?



My new to me '82 H30 has never been named....hard to believe but true - so at least I don't have to dename then rename

I went with "12 year" vinyl lettering (RTA) through my local sign shop. Plenty of lettering styles and colors to match your boat. Easy to apply, and looks great. Holding up perfect after first year.

When I had a sign painter put the name on my boat he used vinyl and it last last on my boat over three years and looks like new.

Generally, vinyl has pretty much taken over as the standard method of putting a name on the boat. Not only is it cheaper but it hold up surprisingly well. While I don't usually consider myself superstitious, a proper de-naming/naming ceremony is a must. Below is a decent link. Don't forget the coin under the mast! Oh, and have fun!

I did mine through ebay, just search for vinyl lettering. It's cheaper. Not sure how well it holds up long-long term, but mine has been on for a year and is going strong.

We did a renaming ceremony, I just used some of the text from a renaming ceremony that popped up when I googled for one. I believe it's not exactly what you say, but how you say it. We all put on grass skirts and leis (sp?) , then anchored. I stood on the foredeck and read it. Then we poured either a beer or a shot over the side for Neptune. Can't remember which. And of course, had the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack playing throughout. It was a good day that I will remember fondly for a long time! It's been a year and she's still floating, so I guess it worked : ) !

so I'll proceed as planned with the naming party. Stilll hard for me to believe - a 28 year old boat and not yet named.....

"Bout Time" sounds just fine - actually, nearly purrrfect! I've had my boat 21 years and only had to replace the vinyl lettering once.

Vinyl...

I had my local Fast Sign store create new lettering to replace the deteriorating original vinyl lettering on my boat's stern that was over ten years old. They used 3M's truck lettering stuff--very strong and easy to apply. This starts the fourth season and it looks like new.

PS: the racing boat I drive is named "About Time" :)

Sad that the boat was never named. It DOES, however, make it less complicated. You don't have to first go through a boat de-naming ceremony! Also, you don't have to worry about the sea gods taking out their wrath on you for re-naming a boat! The bottom line, it carries on a wonderful sailing tradition. Even more, it's a great opportunity to get together with friends and consume some alcohol ! BrianW

and thanx for the info of renaming bought a 25 hunter, and the name is no longer on the boat? did not know what to do!!!!

I used vinyl and have been happy with it. Installed myself (hand cut lettering with exacto knife) in 1997 and has just developed some crazing and cracks this past year. Will re-do next time I pull out for bottom paint.
On the "naming party" I can only tell my experience. This may not play well with the hard partying "yachting" community, but prayer was the most important aspect of my naming ceremony. That was for several reasons: Finally owning the boat was an answer to years of prayer; I am a person of deep faith; and as a recovering alcoholic a big drinking party was the last thing I wanted to be a part of. I think prayer was the right choice for me in commissioning my beloved vessel as she came through a knockdown (mast 10 degrees from water) in a freak hailstorm without ANY damage whatever (see my article in SAIL Magazine from January 2008) and we have been through numerous potentially life-threatening situations without a mark. My prayers for you and your boat as well--Enjoy!
