Not to get this thread started again, but while driving around on the Cape I saw nice redhulled keel sloop on the hard with large white letters on the topside proclaiming her to be NEVER MOORED. Nice philosophy. Also a good name for trailerable I guess. Apologies to Edgar Allen Poe in order. Roger Katty Bay Picnic Cat #123 Cape Cod

Pick up your microphone and make a proper

call using the name you have chosen. Then you will know if it is a good name.

Well said

As Ross suggests try to imagine what it sounds like over the VHF, especially when putting out a Mayday. Then imagine somebody listening and trying to understand you. If your bent on a particular name and it doesn't come across clear see if there's an abbreviation you can use in an emergency. Good luck.

"Cordelia"

Works well with a mayday call. Celtic meaning is jewell of the sea. Just sounds nice and classy. The previous name was "Fidler on the Sea". Previous owner was named Fidler. And for all you literary types out there, our choice had nothing to do with Shakespere and King Lear's daughter. Tim R.

Victim of Fate

We named our C-30 "Victim of Fate" from the lyric in "A Pirate Looks at Forty". Several people were a little taken aback by the word "victim" but we're not worried about that.

Papillon

We went with "Papillon" which is French for butterfly. We added butterfly graphics which look great. The reaction we normally get is "It was a great movie" or "Do you have a Papillon Dog?". Neither one played in naming it. Our previous boat was named "Wynken, Blynken & Nod". We always used "Wynken" to hail with and it seemed to work well. For those who are not familiar, "Wynken, Blynken & Nod" is a Dutch Fairy Tale about a boy who dreamt about fishing from his sailboat which was a wooden shoe. We wanted to use it on our current boat but the stern quarters drop off too much and it would have been difficult to see. Perhaps if there's a next boat.......?

Wynken

My wife had the book and we just thought it a great name, even if a bit long. We used to get a lot of comments on it.

The very worst name I have ever seen was

are you sitting down? here it comes, "FOUR Q" No lie it was on a power cruiser owned by a junk boat breaker in Baltimore.

saw one once

called "Crack of Dawn" and I am told his wife's name was, in fact, Dawn. Hmmmm, that is one patient wife.

Fatal Endeavor

was the worst boat name I ever saw. Gives me cold shivers to think of naming a boat "Fatal" anything, endeavor, trip or whatever.

The best and

..worst boat name I've was a nice looking Sabre named "FIASCO." The "A" in the name was upside down....

On the Rocks

The admiral wanted to rename our "On the Rocks". After being advised that renaming the boat, she let the idea go and had a beer instead.

Unsettling trend

It seems to me that not too long ago, racy double entendres, stupid plays on words, or just plain knuckleheaded boat names were restricted to power boats. Don't get me wrong, I get a chuckle when I see "Nautigirl" and her kin. Is it progress when our fellow sailors start naming their boats "Never Again III"? I'm not sure, but quite frankly, I was also plenty sick of seeing "Wind Dancer" on every other sailboat.

Two Names

Two names I saw on Lake George Last Summer was "Between the Sheets" on a sailboat of course and on a Sea Ray the name of the boats was "Sea Cups". The "Sea Cups" boat was full of skantly clad young ladies. Fair Winds Scott

TSALTA

There's a 130' yacht that cruises Chesapeake Bay named "TSALTA", which is At Last spelled backwards. Gee, everyone felt bad for them that it took so long to finally get that boat. By the way they traded a 115 footer in on it. It must have been a real struggle.

Relax Mike

It's just a boat name. Our Catalina 22 was NautiDuck and our new Catalina 250 is Miss Conduckt. We are University of Oregon "Duck" fans. Our dinghy is Duckling. We think it is fun. That's all that matters.
