Hi Don,
That is good information on the name. Well I have jumped in with both feet on the boat. Had a three axel trailer built so I can move her around, started stripping all 25 layers of bottom coatings off...well maybe just 5 layers. The hull looks like she has never been hurt, no nasties hiding under all that coatings. Found a hair line crack at the bottom of the stern, and a few deep cuts on the head of the keel. All easy to repair. The interior is toast, wood is gone and will have to be pulled out and pitched. Wiring is a mess, so it goes. I am going to bulk head off around the engine compartment, install a pump on each side in that area for any water coming in through the cockpit. I am also going to build a water tight hatch going down into the cabin. New wood works throughout, wiring, range, so on . I play on taking her to Maui, warm water. I live in Oregon and the only warm water here is my bath tub.

Subject: [AlbinVega] Re: Name of Boat:
Larry, I don't know how many or what any names were between 1976 and 1986, but when purchased in 1986, the transom carried the name NEXT then sometime in the 90's it got rename Scirroco, then when the hull wast painted in the early 2000's, at the request of the owner's son it was renamed Black Pearl, I always liked NEXT. It was never documented, so there has been no registered name. I am trying to remember the name of the owner before my friend, but I do know he bought the boat specifically because of the beam, being only 80 inches makes a difference in towing as I am sure you are aware. I don't think he change the name. The boat had its best claim to fame as Next when it won the cruising class in the Port Aransas to Port Isabel race held labor day weekend in 1987. Although being one of the last boats to finish, the time correction for a 24 hour race put us in the lead. Admittedly the owner for that period was not the most diligent at
maintenance, and for better or worse, he did not make a lot of changes in the boat. When things broke, they kind of stayed broken. You should be able to email me directly and ask about anything, but there are questions taht you will have that can be answered by people on this list, they have replace the volvo/combi with yanmars and betas and know what you need to do. The boat is forgiving or my friend would not still be around, it was his first boat, we both learned a lot on it.
