The Rear Admiral wants the name of the boat changed (amoungst other things). I have heard that if you do not follow certain traditions that you tick-off the water gods. Question: what ceremony do you have to perfor to please the water gods? or Do you just scrape off the old name and apply the new one and ignore the rest? Richard on Bluesette or Apres Ski or Blew by You (depending on the name change)*o

Re-naming a boat

Go to this link from 48° North (a great free sailing magazine here in Seattle). http://www.48north.com/mr_offline/denaming.htm It has a great story and ceremony to perform in changing your boats name. When we changed our Catalina 30 from Fat Cat to Matagi, we performed the ritual and not one second passed (no kidding) a pod of Dahl porpoises came out of nowhere and played around our boat for a good 5 minutes! There are other great articles at www.48north.com to check out.

Superstition

I have seen the article before and when and if we change the name of our boat, I am sure to use it. No need to run the risk of making the gods mad. Most of us are not superstitious, but how many times have we gone out of our way to avoid walking under a ladder?

A Simple Bell

I was told if you put a bell on board the boat that someone has gave you. Thats what I did and have had good luck. Tim Welsh H34 AKA Cabo Wabo. P.S. You can't ask someone to buy it for you......

I've always used Vigor's ceremony guidelines

I've used a that guideline in 48 North four times now. It's kinda fun and helps make you feel like the boat is changing her character, while at the same time respecting her past. I don't consider myself a super superstitious person either, but like I always say: can't hurt, might help! I haven't had any major problems with re-naming boats yet! Best, Trevor

Do something

Doesn't matter what, but do somethiing. It's fun and gives you a "personal" touch with your boat; also makes your friends you invite to the ceramony feel part of your sailing scene. OTOH, it doesn't matter. Your boat won't sink because you didn't plead with Neptune. If you're inherently grouchy forget the fun and cast off. But if you're inherently grouchy you wouldn't be sailing so have a christening and sail in peace. Study the various ideas and published stuff and write something on your own. i.e. personalize it. Praise your boat, plead with Neptune, throw in some family humor, annoint the boat, drink a toast, and then take your friends out for whatever you can afford. Most important...ENJOY! Geoff
