what is the best way to get an old name off the side of the boat. I tried a heat gun. Recommendation from the mfgr. of the new name says to take off old name with Oven Cleaner. That sounds harsh and I am concerned to using Oven Cleaner on the Gel Coat. Suggestions please??

Oven Cleaner

Oven cleaner is the method of choice for removing painted-on lettering. A heat gun is used to remove vinyl lettering. There is also a Scotch eraser wheel that some recommend - check the Archives. I used oven cleaner on my 5 year old boat transom with good results. Use a plastic scrapper to get things off. When I used the cleaner in direct sunlight, I got a faint colored stain on the hull but that and all residue came off with Soft Scrub. Follow with a good wax job.

Also 3M chemicals for removing vinyl

JJ: If it is paint, then Oven Off works quick and easy. It will remove the paint and not harm the gel coat. If it is vinyl then you can try the methods that John suggested or try some of the 3M chemicals that will help remove the vinyl.

oven cleaner

My wife and I just purchased our Hunter last season. The boat name was painted on approximately 10 years ago. The oven cleaner did an excellent job removing the painted lettering. It is important not to leave it on for too long. Apply a little at a time. Because of the age of the paint, there is a very faint difference in color where the letters were. However, no damage to the gel coat noted. We plan to place the vinyl lettering over this. Should look good.
