Most of the "do-it-yourself" type lettering decals today will 'lift' from the surface by applying a blow dryer to them. Be carefull scraping though! I've had good luck using a plastic windshield scraper and blow dryer.
After I got the vinyl letters off there was still some residual adhesive. I used Goof-Off to get rid of that and be down to clean gelcoat for the new name. Jim "Prospect"
