Ok, I would like to find out what the differance is between a loose footed main and one that is not. Can someone please explain that to me without going into great detail? I just want to understand the differance between the two and why, I know what the look like, sailed on a 12 meter KC-87 i believe, and just wanted to understand the differance. Thank you

A loose footed main is only attached to the boom at the tack and clew. A main that has a shelf foot is attached the entire length of the boom. The main benefit of the loose footed main is that it is not constrained by the boom to shape the lower part of the sail. Wheras the shelf foot limits the shape that can be put into the sail as the outhaul is eased. It isn't a major difference but given my choice I'll take the loose foot any day.
