Mystery Part on 1986 Hunter 25.5 Mast

While sailing this weekend with crew we noticed a mystery part located on the mast below the boom on my Hunter 25.5. The piece is made out of stainless steel, and comes out from the mast, and then bends upwards at a 90 degree angle. The piece has a thumb screw that allows it to move up and down in the mast track below the boom. It looks like an original piece, I am just not sure what it is for. Any ideas or answers would be appreciated.

The part is used to secure the pop-up top against the mast when not sailing.

Sounds like a piece I had on my 22

foot Catalina. This boat had a pop-top, when you put the pop-top up it rested against the mast. then slid this hook up the mast and hooked the fiberglass top to it there by keeping the pop top up.
