I am replacing the running rigging on this boat. I have a mystery line that is secured at the base of the mast, runs up through the middle rope clutch beneath the gooseneck and disappears into the boom. What does it do and how do I replace it?

Sounds like an outhaul, used to tension the foot of the main to adjust sail shape. Or maybe a topping lift...what comes out of the aft end of the boom?

Perhaps you could post a picture of the forward and rear end of the boom... or at least reveal the make and model of your vessel. Otherwise... since there are so many ways to rig an outhaul or configure the boom.. we'll all be guessing right along with you.

I have an ‘83 H31 and I have one of those. It just sits there knotted at the end of the boom and cooled up by the mast. I have just left it to use as a messenger if I need to get anything through the boom.

The boom is designed for three lines: the middle line is the mainsail outhaul, the starboard line I use for the first reef and the port line for the second reef.

On my H26 I use the port line for my topping lift.

It's noted in the title of the thread.
oops........ Sorry.... I was looking for it in the I.D. box on left side.... didn't even scroll up to the title... but a picture would still help, I think.
