Mystery Leak

My Vega lives on fresh water so not easy to determine whether leak is from rain, water tank, toilet or engine inlet, or even condensation.A small amount of water collects inside the starboard cockpit locker just inside the vertical wooden support for the starboard bunk (where the inside of the locker/inner hull meets vertical support). This appears to then slowly leak across the saloon sole into the upper bilge (battery location) and then to main bilge from which it is pumped out eventually by the automatic 12V bilge pump.I've checked (with talcum powder) window seals and deck fittings and those seem ok.Obviously the cockpit sole seal is an obvious suspect but even if seal was faulty could rain water get from there into starboard saloon locker when boat is on its berth?I think that there is a tube running from starboard saloon locker to bilge?I'm starting to get obsessive about this - I just don't like leaks in boats! The auto bilge pump makes it difficult to assess the amount of water involved (a cupfull per day????) and the relatively dry warm June weather removes most of the lingering evidence. The boat is strewn with talcum powder (baby changing powder)!Any suggestions? I'm considering pouring water coloured with different coloured food dye (at different times) onto different parts of the exterior and looking for coloured drips in the locker..Is there a better way?ThanksJohn V1447 Breakaway

I meant to say "A small amount of water collects inside the starboard *saloon* locker"

I have two footpumps under the sink. I replaced the one coming from
the water tank. The other one pumps salt water. The pump was leaking
and running forward along the inside of the starboard bunk down low
where the front of the bunk meets the hull. It was leaking into the
battery compartment in the bilge. I shut off the the through hull
but will replace the pump sometime this summer. Anyway a leak back
at the sink area seems to run forward. Maybe there is a clue
there???

An ice box leak is a possibility I didn't think of.

I removed the salt water pump recently (like you I havent removed the through hull fitting but talc powder says no leak there).

Thanks,

Is ice box water leaking into that area?

Any water in the heads will run along the starboard side under the berth and
into the bilge.
In my MkI Vegas there are a couple of slots that allow water to drain into
the bilge, however if these get blocked with dust & debris you will end up
with a puddle .. if you clear the slots it should be damp at worst.

Some options for the source of the water:

- if you have the sink that drains into the heads and slides back to the
business, when you slide the sink back then any residual water in the sink
will end up taking the starboard berth route (and also if you accidentally
pump water into the sink when it's in that position).
- we sail in cold waters, so the seacock for the heads gets quite a bit of
condensation and takes the same route
- I have an original seacock (1969?) that drips occasionally when open ..
and that ends up going the same wayHope that helps,

I had a cracked starboard locker lid pipe where the drain line attaches that was leaking and ending up coming in the saloon under the starboard settee.

It's all so simple once it's solved isn't it? :)

Yes,
it is definitely water at least - I tasted it.. :)

A day spent crawling round examining hose clips to look forward to.

John,

I had a leak exactly as you describe some years ago. It turned out to
be the fresh water foot pump for the galley sink. It had developed a slow
leak and because it is installed lower than the fresh water tank it leaked
continually. If you feel dampness on the underside of the pump there is a
good chance that's your problem. I replaced the pump and the problem went
away. The water collected in the saloon locker because the tiny drain hole
there that normally empties into the bilge was plugged.
