Mystery Cable

I bought a 75 Hunter 30... a boat filled with curious and questionable repairs and alterations.

Here's my mystery.......There is a cable that runs from the deck through a pole that goes through the middle of the cabin into the bilge and through a hole through the back of the keel. I haven't dived under yet to see where this cable ends up. The cable had a loop end on top and went through a small roller. The whole mechanism was under a bowl (a literal bowl attached to the deck) This is not a swing keel.... and not original to the boat.

Any thoughts on what this is? Why go to so much trouble.... why put another hole in the bottom of the boat.

Ah, a mystery wrapped in an enigma! Let's start with the first "Whaaaat"?
A 'pole' in the middle of the cabin? A picture would help all round, but failing that,
Where in the cabin? Where does the cable exit on the deck? Where does it penetrate the cabin sole? How big is the pole? What's it made of?
Sooo many questions, so little brain power to digest the questions you posed without more info.
Send me a PM and perhaps I can help.

Okay.....so Hunter did make a centerboard version of the 30.....but all that's there is a cable.......no lifting mechanism. Pictures coming.

If you have a centerboard boat, that cable should eventually find its way to a winch. From your description it sounds like the winch might have been on the mast.

Next question...
Is there a swing keel under the boat?
Is it up or down?
Are you in the water or on the hard?
