Mystery brackets on transom

I have two brackets attached to the transom just to port of the helm seat and walk through. The lower one has a SS machine screw and nut through it. You can see them in the attached photo taken by the broker before we bought the boat. There are two other H27-3's this broker has for sale, they also have these brackets on the transom. I checked the owner's manual, no reference at all. The bimini has nothing that attaches to them either. Anyone have any idea what they might be for???

The helm seat slides into to stout brackets for use, I wondered what to do with it when not in use. The PO stowed it in the cockpit locker which is pretty small. There are no attachment points on the seat other than the slides. That is actually one of my spring projects, I have a SS eye bolt that I am going to attach to the seat and a length of 1/4" yacht braid line to run from the eye bolt to the aft rail. I just know that if I let that seat slip when removing or installing it's going right out the back and down to the bottom.

I see that Craig beat me to the warning but allow me to reinforce it.Whenever attaching boat components to the rail or swim platform I would strongly encourage the attachment and use of a safety cable. It would be very difficult if not next to impossible to find a helm seat replacement if lost. I have no idea what those brackets are for; call up a dealer and see if they have an explanation that makes sense.

I have a 2009 Hunter 27 and went through this exercise when I first bought the boat. Those brackets hold the helm seat when not in use. Not too easy to use. As I steer from one side to the other, I have stowed the helm seat in my dock locker.

Really? Looking at the brackets and the seat I can't see the connection, but I'll look again the next time I'm down at the club..........assuming it ever stops snowing.

Kloudie you were correct!

I have the same brackets on my 2007 H-31 that are located on the starboard side. Was going to show a picture to the Marlow-Hunter people at the Chicago boat show but never made it due to an unscheduled trip to the dentist. If it is a bracket for the seat - I would be afraid to loose it overboard. I just leave the seat in place while sailing.

I found this on the Marlow-Hunter website, it is a 27e, there is supposed to be a pin attached to the upper bracket with a wire lanyard. I can see myself dropping the helm seat overboard trying to get it set up for sure. These brackets on my boat will be going unused!!

please take another close up photo of what you are talking about along with the backside of the helm seat. On the backside of the helm seat I need to see the bottom lip. It has been a long time and my mind is going blank.

Dave, in the photo I attached above it shows the Hunter 27 helm seat attached to those brackets. Although that answers the mystery bracket question, I doubt I will ever use them for that or any other purpose.

Craig;
I forgot about that specific seat but make sure the seat when not in place is locked down hanging off the back of the transom. Some folks used those brackets which to fashion a wall using the bracket to affix to the boat to keep personal gear and dogs from going out the back into the drink. Imagine your car keys fell into the floor and were kicked accidentally into the Pamlico Sound just like it happened once to one of my customers..

I can see all of that you describe going out the back as easy to do, mentioned that to the admiral the first trip out on the boat. I think the helm seat will live in the cockpit locker when not in place, I can see fumble fingering the pins and the seat going to the bottom. I have the makings of a helm seat tether on my workbench, I'm just waiting for the weather to break to install it.
