A few weeks ago we saw this incredible boat sailing South of Plum Island on the eastern tip of Long Island. It was enormous. The Mystic Whaler was fairly close behind it for a while and it dwarfed the 103 foot Mystic Whaler in length. Does anyone have any idea what it is?

Tole Mour

Beautiful ship. I saw the title of the post and was sure the pic was going to be of the Kalmar Nyckel. She sailed thru NY this week.

Nope, Not the same ship.

Count the ports on the hull, the cabin configuration and check the yardarms. Ricks boat is a barq. Did I abbreviate that right? *o

I Think Freddy's Right...

...she's similar but not the same boat. I pulled up the photos side by side. The rig looks pretty much the same, but the aft cabin looks different. Both pretty boats none the less. Sorry to head you on this one. Rick D.

3 masted, topsail schooner

A Barque would be square rigged on her first 2 masts (foremast & mainmast) and fore/aft rigged on her mizzen. A Barquentine would be square rigged only on the foremast with the main and mizzen being rigged fore/aft. I believe both of these ships would be classified as 3 Masted Topsail Schooners. Whichever one it was, it was incredible. We were sailing along north of Gardiner's Island and off in the distance I saw what looked like a structure of some kind, in an area in which I knew there were no structures. we sailed towards it and as we got closer and I looked through the binoculars, I saw square topsails and was blown away. We altered course to get close and saw that the Mystic Whaler was sailing only a half mile or so behind it. That combination of ships, heading in the general direction of Sag Harbor made me think I had gone into a time warp. And the best part is that both ships were under full sail -- unlike so many "sailing ships" that unfurl a sail or two for the tourists aboard and always travel under power. By the way, the date was August 27.

Mystic Whaler...

... is in the Chesapeake. We saw it sailing towards the Patapsco River (Baltimore) this past Sunday around noon. Mystic Whaler is also a schooner. Tom s/v Orion's Child

My opinion

I think it is 10 Reinell 25s bolted together.

Looks like the same boat I saw in July while sailing in the LI Sound and of coarse I can't find the pictures now to compare.

Mystery solved!

I went home last night and looked through a couple of books I have on Tall Ships. I found Toul Mour, the ship that Rick Dinon saw in the Pacific last July. The picture in my book matches up with the pic Rick posted. According to my book, Tole Mour was built in Seattle in 1988. She has a steel hull and is rigged as a Topsail Schooner. She is 156'LOA with a beam of 31' and draws 13'6". Rick, her home port is Honolulu. She served as a hospital ship in the Marschall Islands for quite a while and was named through a contest held among the school children on the Marschall Islands. The name means "gift of life and health". How appropriate. Here come the interesting part that I think solves our mystery. She was designed by a firm in Auckland, New Zealand "and is NEARLY a sister ship of the national sail training ship of New Zealand, Spirit of New Zealand". I added the caps to the word "nearly" as I think the ship Ted Weitz saw off the tip of Long Island a few weeks ago was probably "Spirit of New Zealand". The pictures these guys posted are remarkably close but not exact. "nearly a sister ship". My book is copyrighted 1996. Ships change hands and ships change names so whatever she is going by these days I think this solves the mystery. What do you think? Tom s/v Orion's Child P.S. Ted, if you think this ship, at 156' LOA dwarfed the 105' Mystic Whaler, you should see some of the really big Tall Ships. Kruzenshtern, from Russia is the largest at 376' but there are many over 300'. I saw Kruzenshtern in the Delaware Bay heading for Wilmington, DE one year. She was too tall to go to Philly. TCB Correction, Kruzenshtern is the second largest, Sedov, also from Russia, is 386'. Both are 4 masted Barques. TCB

BTW She's a 3 masted square topsail schooner

She's 170 feet overall and 127 feet on deck and launched (get this) only 6 months ago in March 2007 More info here http://www.voyagermystic.com/tsm_specs.htm

Tall ship Mystic

That sure looks like her. Judging by where it sails, I guess I will be seeing her regularly from now on. A lovely bit of scenery. Thanks for the detective work.

Glad to see....

Glad to see there are companies who are still offering trips on such ships as these and in the Northeast no less.....
