Hello all Yamaha owners,, greetings from Seoul, Korea,,
Yesterday ,, I bought a day sail ,, a 17 footer Yamaha ,, made over 30 years ago ,,but registered in 2005.
I will be sailing this boat in the river ,, few steps from my summer house ,,
To find about the boat ,,I've sent an EM to New Japan Yacht ,, response was that they no longer have any info on the boat since it was built ,, so so long ago.
Any way she is in a pristine condition with a Nissan 8HP outboard,,that is almost brand new and starts in one pull. All the riggings have no rust or corrosion , sails are new dacrons.
She is pretty and in a few days she will be going in the water ,, I will be having many questions and I hope ,,, your kindness will prevail and Yamaha heads will sort me out here ,,on any questions I may have.
Some pics here for your reference ,,,
If any one knows about this cutie ,, all your feed backs will be eaten up by me like a sponge.
Thanks again ,,,
Yun-Soo

My recent conversation with Yamaha.

Thank you Takahashi ,,
I have many boats ,,, but funny ,, I love this Yamaha 17 the most ,, because I can sail this right in the middle of Seoul on Han river ,
If you ever come to Korea ,, I would be happy to take you out on my new love,,
I have a 1977 , Moody 46,,,, which I bought in England and sailed it to Korea ,, they still have all the records and the spare parts for the boat,, when ever I need them. Hope Yamaha does same soon,
Any way my Yamaha 17 is like a brand new boat ,, everything perfect as if new ,, as if it was in a time capsule all this time ,,
Thanks again ,
Yun-Soo PARK

Yun-Soo,
Looks like a high quality wonderful little boat and it is a "time warp" to boot. I see a crank accessible from the cockpit. Must be for raising and lowering the centerboard. Good luck and great sailing. Attached is an image of my boat which is a Yamaha 26 tall rig also in like new condition. If you are ever in my area let me know and I will take you out for a sail on San Francisco Bay.

Keel

Nice boat! Does her has a keel? Or it is retractable?
Yes dee,,, she has a retractable CB ,, that hangs 30cm below the bottom,,, her draft is 55cm up and 105cm with down. The lever in the cockpit has a crank handle.
She will be going in the water this weekend ,, had to build a permanent berth for her and custom covers made for her. But come mid December , she is out of the water for Han river freezes with 30cm ice,,
;(

Yes Jan,, Your boat is pretty ,,
I am discovering more and more each day ,, my boat,,,they were five specially built edition by Yamaha in 1980 , the Japanese owner had bought two and kept one in the storage all these years ,, sailed her very few times ,, ( Japan has strange law ,, that old fiber boats must be junked and to do that cost more than the boat due to environmental regulations and Korea is fast becoming junk yard of old boats) Koreans in other hand are just now opening our eyes to the pleasure of sailing ,, a friend of mine,, Capt.Yoon just did a sold around the world in a 32ft,,, 10,000 dollar used Japanese throw away ,, his story http://cafe.daum.net/yoontaegeun ,, he started sailing only ten years ago.,,

Korean used boat dealer saw my boat and bought her to use as his personal toy ,, she was imported into Korea in October of 2010. He is a motor head and sailed her only once I saw the ad for the boat in July ,, asking price was USD 10,000 (He says it cost him USD11,000 for the boat,, taxes and transport) I bought her last Saturday for USD 7,000
She was fork lifted on to a 5 ton truck at the Busan YC and was driven to my cottage 400KM up north for USD 400. This Saturday it will cost another USD 150 to fork lift her to the water's edge and craned into the water. 8HP Nissan outboard has ten hours and purrs like a kitten... interior of the boat I can eat off ,, even the lines and the sail ,, I could get ten years of use ,,, I did oil the teaks today ,, still 90% new condition ,,, I feel very lucky so far and let see how she behaves in the water ,,,this weekend.
Wish me luck folks,,,

Yun-Soon, I noticed the crank now. At first sight I thought it is a manual starter for diesel engine. But she comes with an outboard, I overlooked.

She is such a beautiful boat, and very new. Lucky you. My 25 footer is pretty old, and I'm still working hard on the repairs. She will be de-mast for check up soon, and will be lifted up for bottom work in the coming X'mas.

in the first and third picture is possible to see another rope there...what's the purpose? Can't that hold the rudder up? Or, in the rudder chain plate doesn't have a hole to hold it up with a pin to prevent it folds down again?

Anyway, the system you used works nicely!

My kick up rudder will not stay up ,, I devised a rope pulley, without drilling a hole or taking apart the rudder ,, When I look in,, I don't think there is an up system that keeps it up.
Hmmmmm,,,

Thanks ,,,
The second rope came with the boat ,, it is tied to a bunge at the bottom and the purpose is to spring load the rudder to keep it down ,, in the event that you hit something,, after regressing she should pop right back to the drop position,,,
I thought about drilling a hole ,, then decided against it ,, never know what I will find in there ,, led? ,, crumbling FRP?
