My question is did McGregor do this at some sort of flotation assistance? Or perhaps a previous owner of the boat, put them in there to prevent the mast light wires from slapping around and making noise?
When I bought my Venture 21 (the same as newer McGregor 21) the space under the berth in the bow and the area of under the cockpit in the stern had large Styrofoam blocks of large dimension ( ie 1' X 1' X 3') cut to fill the spaces.
This was done so that boat would float when if capsized.
To my knowledge peanuts were never used.
Dinghy sailors add flotation to masts so that when they capsize it does not end up straight down. That makes a huge difference to the effort required to right the boat. It also prevents it from getting buried in mud.
On the down side it adds weight and absorbs moisture.
