I have an '88 Hunter 28.5 with the iron keel that has some sort of white (epoxy?) coating on it. Last fall, I cleaned off all the paint, filled in the few rust spots. Sanded, de-waxed like 5 times (no water beading) then applied 4 coats of VC Tar, about 3-4 hours drying time between coats. Let it dry 3 days (60+ degrees each day), then applied 2 coats of Micron CSC. I put her in Lake Michigan in May and just took her out today. Imagine my surprise when they powerwashed the bottom and all the VC Tar was gone! The power washng didn't remove it..it was just gone! Wha' happened???? Anyone else ever have this happen? The yard guy said that, since there's no rust showing, I should just paint it and forget it. But I'd like to know why the VC Tar disappeared. As an aside, I did the rudder at the same time as the keel, and the VC Tar and the paint stuck. Hmmm!

Is it possible that the Micron CSC paint acted as a solvent to the VC tar? It could be that some chemical in the Micron reacted with the tar. I use VC 17 only and the tar barrier coat on the boat is undiminished since I bought the boat (7 years now). Just a possibility... Mike

I would suspect an incompatibility between the VC Tar and the Micron AF. I would talk to the Interlux folks- they can probably give you the definitive answer.All the info I have on Interlux coatings says VC TAR with VC 17, no mention of it with any other AF coatings

This is a tough one. VC Tar is a black, coal-tar based epoxy. It's used to prime the hull (underlying epoxy in your case) for VC17 bottom paint. According to Interlux, most bottom paints can be applied directly over VC17. However, they don't say anything about bottom paint directly over VC Tar. Just out of curiosity, why did you apply the VC Tar, and why use four coats? I concur with Richard Breyer that the problem seems to be an incompatibility of VC Tar and Micron CSC. I have contacted the Interlux folks and they are confused, too! I chose VC Tar due to recommendations from other sailor friends who have boats and from my buddy, a boat mechanic and general "boat yeard guy". It also seemed easier and was a little less costly then other epoxy offerings. Directions on the can and via their website said "4 coats minimum" or 8-10 mils of thickness.
