My first choice would be a salvage yard, and have them do the install. Salvage yards are in the business of making money, and aren't going to install a transmission they aren't sure of. It will be one they actually saw drive and will have new fluid and filter. Most will give 90 days or more warranty, as well as some history of what it came out of, the VIN, and its mileage. Think of it this way. It was used the day after it drove off the lot in 2000, and has been used ever since. A good used one could set the clock back a long ways.

Caveat! If you buy a used trans from a salvage yard to have someone else install it, all bets are off. Salvage yards warranty is then only to replace the part, they will not pay labor. In those cases they often yank a tranny off the shelf they know nothing about. If it works, they win. If not, you bring it back to exchange it and they still win. Have them install it, then they have to eat the labor. And read it again, they are going to put in a good one because they dont want to eat the labor.

I started out working in a Transmission shop, and oh man did it ever open my eyes. Virtually all rebuilders, including AAMCO, are a racket. They use used parts to fix transmissions, including reusing clutch discs, and charge new prices and tell you (sell you) its a complete rebuild. You get a used transmission that is basically "fixed. They can offer a lifetime warranty because they have so little invested while they charge quite admirably.

Ask the dealer for a quote on a factory reman. It might be expensive, but if you can live with it, Ford will back it for quite a while. But again, calling it a reman might be a stretch. Its just a bigger facility using used parts over to make a working transmission. Though AFAIK they do replace clutches and seals with new.

You could probably have several used ones installed before you would pay for a reman. Just sayin.

Just when the weather is turning nice. My truck started acting funny yesterday.
After I got home I cleaned the MAF sensor because the CEL was on and the codes suggested that.
After cleaning I tested the truck and the tranny started acting up. Over space of a few minutes it went from acting funny, to stalling the motor when I put it in gear, to just not working at all!
CRAP!
I checked the fluid and no matter what I did, it showed over full.
I have never put fluid in it before. I'm thinking that if the torque converter is shot, that would explain the high fluid level?
Now I'm faced with choosing a transmission shop.
In the past I've had bad luck with those places.
Any suggestions ?
It's a 2000, Ford Expedition.
I have a 2000 Expy, too. Bought it from a dealer for $6K and found out the booster pump was broken (it's a 4.6L). Very slow acceleration, blinking OD light, and burned fluid were the symptoms. Benchmark Transmission fixed it for $2800 with 3 year warranty and 3 years of free checks and tranny adjustments. Now, there are 2 sure signs your transmission is bad 1) your OD light on the wiper stack is going to keep flashing, b) your transmission fluid will be burned (black instead of red a smelling like burned oil). If neither is true, you are unlikely to have transmission problems. Check your drive train, and, frankly, tow your car to Benchmark or AAMCO to have it checked. I(n the end you will pay less then starting randomly replacing parts from a junkyard. And a junkyard tranny will cost a grand, easy.

I don't really have time to do a lot of research, so I had it towed to Aamco today.
I asked about a new tranny and they said no.
I asked about getting set up with a cooler and they said they do that. So I might have one of those added in.

I vote for the broken or cracked flex plate. AKA a flywheel.
I'll betcha a beer, the flex plate is fine.
I moved the truck so the wrecker could get it from behind. I was whining the whole time and barely moved.
The Aamco guy said it sounded like a shot pump to him.
I'm waiting on pins and needles to hear from them.
Since the fluid level was real high and didn't look or smell burnt to me, I'm thinking the torque converter came apart and won't pull in fluid. The shrapnel from it might have taken out the hydraulic pump and maybe trashed the valve body?
It' seems to shift though, just doesn't grab and put out torque.
I hope they call today or tomorrow.

That sounds right. Is it 4.8 or 5.6L? Ford wanted to sell some Expys cheaper, so they put 4.8 and built a weak tranny to go with it. if the pump went, it would explain almost no shift and the noise.

its a 5.4 motor.
I've heard that a lot of them lose trannies around 130K miles. Mine is 135K.
The Aamco guy says he thinks it's a strong tranny, but I have no idea.
I'm gonna go see in in the morning.
He's giving me 4 choices on torque converters.
anyone know if it reallly makes much difference?
1. stock, weakest. obo, $400.
2. billet style, thinest, $7ish
3. billet style thicker ???
4. billet style, thickest, I forget, 1500 or something.
He recommended the middle billet one because of my boat.
Opinions?

A grand is more than three grand? I had a yard quote me $900 for an E4OD 4x4 trans, installed, with 6 month warranty and nationwide coverage. Heck, for $2800 you could just buy another Expedition, maybe even a better one with less miles. You would have to put a gun to my head to make me spend that kind of money on mine. Its not worth it.

Also, clean fluid is not an indication the transmission has not failed. I've seen plenty of E4OD's that failed without ever burning fluid.

hmmm,
In my area, when I bought it last year I shopped about a month.
Expy's around 2000 yr and 120K miles were going for around what I paid, 4K. There are some cheaper ones around but they're beat up.
Mine was really clean.
I'm not sure about the quality of the tranny, I've never had work done at a big company before. I do know I've have had hit or miss luck at junk yards with other stuff.

Thats why I said I would never buy a used trans from a yard unless they install it. They dont want to redo it for free anymore than you do. But if you buy one to have someone else install it, the yard could care less if it works or what it costs you. If they dont have one they know for sure is good, they will pass on installing it.

I dont know about Houstons prices, but everything seems to go up in price as you go south. Also, I see a lot with high asking prices, then you see some show up for a song. Mines a 97 with 180K. Its a gas hog, but its sure been bulletproof. But its time to let it go, Minnesota salt has begun to take its toll. If mine quit tomorrow I would likely part it out and scrap whats left. Its just not worth dumping money into. Ive seen some around here that needed something minor sell for less than a grand.

That really bites if you only bought it a month ago and the trans died. We bought ours in 04 with 80K miles and bought an extended warranty for almost 2 grand. They made money on that deal, lol.

Sorry, I get confused about the exact size of those engines (both are from Mustangs). Anyway, yes, the 5.4L had the stronger tranny. so it's a converter? Figures. I would go with the middle one, too. And a cooler!

I've been going to bone yards since I was 16. and I've never heard of one installing their used parts and warranting the work.

it was always you buy it, and take your chances... if it doesn't work in 90 days, bring it back and well give you a new one. (if you could find a shop that warranties the used parts and labor, that would be great).

my '03 expedition has the 5.4. and a trans cooler. (& 4speed trans) no real problems to speak of... later models had a 5 speed trans and hear of some problems with them.

-well used they aren't worth much... less than 5k.

I think I would have a leak down test (compression) done on the engine before deciding how much $ to put in the trans.... stock lasted how long? vs how long is the engine going to last...

well I got my truck back on Friday evening.
It cost an arm and a leg but it's back on the road.
They put an external cooler for it in front of my radiator/ac coil, and nid not reconnect it to my radiator.
I had them install a billet style torque converter. It's not a stall / racing type. When driving it feels the same as the old one. they told me it's made for heavy loads like you would see in an RV.
Now I get to put my attention back to my trailer axle and springs.
Hope I can be getting the Mac wet in a couple of weeks.

Good deal. I know it was expensive, but at least now you have a truck with a good transmission in it vs. just buying an other one and wondering about it and you would of spent even more money doing that.

Of course this is coming from someone who holds on to things forever. Our newest vehicle is a '99 and the oldest a '48. Good thing is no car payments, cheaper insurance and plates and I get to spend that money on tools, boats and race cars :),
