Not only is the stanchion bolt missing, but also one of the bolts that holds the braces at the base of the stanchion has worked itself loose and the 5200 that it was bedded in has not held. Of course, there is a leak, because there is no access to any backing nut or plate that I can see or feel on the interior. Any suggestions? I went to Fawcetts and got several bolts to "test." Can't figure out whether the stanchion bolt is supposed to be secured by a nut that I can't see inside the stanchion, or is the stanchion post threaded on the inside. Of course, I am doing all this fiddling at the dock, and am not going to remove other stanchion bolts to see what's up with them! Just wondering if someone has already gone thru this, and can help me out ...

Bolt

Can't help you with the bolt into the stanchion but the brace bolt is threaded into an aluminum plate under the deck. If that is stripped out then you can retap with a larger bolt. These are not the best designed stanchions in the world. Don't pull on them at the top of the stanchion, it will probably cause gelcoat cracks and may seperate the deck from the core. I would not advise using 5200 as a caulk. To strong an adhesive if you need to take off later.

Try this

You didn't give a year but on my '89 30 the stanchion is bolted thru the deck joint and has a nut and washer on the unerside, exposed. The two screws for the stanchion brace are just into the deck. Set in epoxy.

stanchion

You didn't say what year, but when I owned my '88 28.5 the stanchions were bolted thru the toe rail. I never had any trouble, it seemed like a very secure way to bolt them. Maybe the bolt broke or came loose from the stanchion tube. Or possibly the nut came loose and is missing. Hard to tell without seeing it.

3/8 or 5/16 bolt

I can't remember which of the 2 sizes it is but one of them works. The thread inside the stanchion may be stripped but I doubt it. Best use the bolt, a regular washer, and then a lock washer. 2 x 1/4 bolts hold the plate on to the toe rail. Its a fairly strong arrangement but still does not fill me with a lot of confidence. I recently was pushed up against a dock which buckled the diagaonal support. I had to take the whole thing off to rebuild it. Allen

bolt straight thru

On my 86 28.5 the stantion bolt on the inward side of the stantion dropped straight thru to a simple non slip nut, easily visible in the cabin- not very aesthetic ....but functional. Same as Don's.

get out the drill

i have replaced a couple of stanchions on my 86 28.5...the bolt i think youare referring to is the one on the brace that goes into the deck....that bolt threads into a nut that was glassed into the deck during construction...drill straight down thru the bolt and thru the cabin head liner...then use a small hole maker to make a neat hole in the liner...put a new bolt thru the brace ..one short enough not to stick down below the head liner...put on a washer the size of the hole and thread on your nut.it is really easy...good luck...schaefer

Drill

Mark Schafer's response is good but I would see if you can tap new threads for the bracket. If not drill a small hole through the deck, inject with thickened epoxy, or if you can place a piece of metal, wood or even a piece of fiberglass ( look around the marina junk yard) between the headliner and the bottom of the deck, redrill and through bolt with washer and top off with an acorn nut or plastic cap. This will give added stability to the brace.
