This is my simple solution to convert the table to a sleeping birth on my 2001 Catalina 310. Materials cost $10. I orginally did this for my 6 year old daughter but I think an adult would fit here easily as well. I am 5'11" and was able to stretch my legs.

This is my prototype. I will be finishing the wood box legs (rattle can paint) and put a small rubber cover or anti-skid mat on top of the legs so there is no creaking from the table. It is VERY strong and well supported.

The post is 2" PVC with end caps that I found and fit well.

Looks like it will work. I guess it must have been sold as an option, cause I have the stubby poll and form fit cushion that came with the used purchase.

I wish I could find a cheap filler cushion some where. The other settee cushion works, but a properly fit one would be great.

From everything I know there is no kit only home made. Like the idea, but should the legs be tied together somehow as the boat could move even at anchor.

BTW, which cushion is that?

Mine is not home made. The stubby still has the original packing and the extrusion is the same has the long support poll. The cushion matches the upholstery exactly.

I do not think there is a need to tie the legs. With weight on the legs there is basically zero movement. I originally thought that I would have to secure the legs to the bottom of the table with velcro or something but I do not even think that is necessary since the post sits in both "sockets" and reduces chance of movement. I guess only time (and a storm) will tell.

The cushion on the table top is the starboard settee cushion.

Matt, I had the same idea so glad to see it worked. I am planning a guys weekend and would like to build this ahead of time, my 310 is 2hrs away so by chance do you have the height dimensions of the PVC and the blocks?

unfortunately I do not. I might be down at the boat this weekend and I can get them for you.

My dimensions:

PVC post = 12.2"
wood blocks = 12.5" tall

Great idea, I had some friends join me from down state for a trip to Beaver Is. Mi. Needed an extra berth. I looked at my wash bucket (5gal pail) and bought a second one at Ace, removed the handle from one of them and cut both pails at the 13" ring. I do not use the tables, just set the buckets down and move the stbd seat over. Worked great. Without the handle they store inside each other in the port lazertte. Ron

I'm quite happy with this pilot berth idea

Simply a board, a piano hinge, and a step-stool we place under it when in use. Nothing to store, simple, and neat. The board simply swings down and the mattress filler is used as a bolster in the salon. This works best if there is a table leaf or such to function as a lee cloth.

In fact, the table is designed to lower and make a king berth, but moving it is a pain and the boat already has 2 queen state rooms. However, this is fast, is often used as a pilot berth (I can catch a few Zs while someone inexperienced is on watch), and it is the coolest, best ventilated spot on a hot night.

Attached are photos of my new bed in the salon. I took a Larson 16 1/2 Inch Fluted Aluminum Tapered Boat Table Pedestal Post and cut 5" off the fluted end. The height of the new post + table is perfect. The cushion from the back wedges in the side gaps to form a perfect fit. Right now this is the perfect bed for my 7 year old son who doesn't want to sleep with his sister in the aft bed.

Tomorrow I am cutting 4 steal leg post and stabilizing it for an adult.

Very happy with this setup as every thing is easy to store and use.
