My Ruder broke!

I had only been sailing for about 2 hours in my "new" 1980 25' Oday when the rudder broke at the lower pintles.

Does anybody have a set of drawings for the rudder for a shoal draft centerboard version like mine?

I saw a conversation this morning where some people had made their own out of marine plywood and I would like to try that. I noted that they did not use fibreglass, while I thought that glass over the layers of plywood would be required. Any input?

I have done quite a bit of cad drawings for homes and don't think making the drawings would be so bad, but the bottom half is in the Gulf!

Please help.

PS: The motor also bought the farm over the weekend while I tried to struggle home. It was a memorable weekend. The sea trials went smoothly a week ago, but the transport towards home was a dissaster.
A bystander said I should move up to a 15hp 2 stroke (from the 9.9). Any suggestion on that and preferrable make?

Nobody makes a 2 stroke bigger than about 5hp anymore.

I think that you can get a rudder drawing with all the specs from the Mystic Seaport Museum in CT. I've been told that Hunt Associates gave them all the specs to the O'Day boats. You'll have to contact them and find out what the costs are. It would be nice if you could find someone local who has a boat like yours who would be willing to let you take a few measurements and get some proper angles of his rudder.
As for the outboard, the only difference between a 9.9 and a 15 hp two stroke engine is the carburetor, so I'm told. The 15 is basically the same engine with a larger carb. I have a 1999 Johnson 8 hp two stroke on my boat and I love that engine. It's so dependable. I don't like four stroke outboards and I'm going to try to make my two stroke last as long as I can. I'd have to change the bracket on my transom to a heavy duty bracket if I went to a four stroke.

Guy, I have not used Rudy save purchasing a few minor parts, but people seem to talk about him alot on here. have you tried D&R Marine and talk to him yet? Seems that might be a good starting point for the rudder.

Also an O'Day 25, most mfg's will have a stock one for you if you want to buy one quickly.

And about the motor, I would seriously look for a used one on-line craigslist or local repair shops. The heavier ones will put quite a strain on your transom.

Not much help for you, but just my thoughts on the issue.

Oh, last item, my last boat I lost my rudder though. I made mine from scratch Took som planks laminated them for solidity, and glassed them and coated with epoxy. Worked out very well. however it was an old boat and no plans anywhere for it.

Soooo, I guessed on the shape and size of the rudder. i did ask a few rudder suppliers got some quotes and they based them on boat size, so i took the quote rough dimensions and simply made my own. However it cost sailing time and was a trade off. $500 new on from supplier or build my own low cost but lots of lost time on the water. And no guarantee the bought one would be good as i said no one had dimensions for mine so it was all guesswork.

I have a new Merc 9.9 on my 25 and 2/3 throttle will get me to hull speed. any more is wasted.

Just in case no one knows, in 80's or 90's the changed the way horse wadis figured on outboards. It used to be figured at the power head no it is figured at the prop. So a 9.9 hp engine is equivlent to an older 15 hp. Or at least close to it. So you need to be carefull steping up to 15 hp you could actually be putting more like a 20 hp or more on a boat that was made for a15 max
