While I was looking for the running light wires (on my H23), I came across a wire running along the starboard side of the hull. It goes through the bulkhead, to right behind the porta-potty, where it sticks into what looks like a through hull with hardened plastic in the middle. Is this a through hull for a marine head? Is it factory? Why would the wire be plasticized into it? If it is the aforementioned through hull, has anyone used it to install a head? I can't stand the porta potty, and would much prefer a head for overnighting (and my wife would, especially!). THANKS for any advice! Kris Cox

I installed a marine head on my old H25. I don't know the interior of the 23 very well but a marine head shouldn't be a big problem. I don't know what the wire and thru hull are for. Perhaps an old depth finder? Check the West Marine catalog, I think they have a good discussion of basic head plumbing. With regard to your running light problem, I think the "short" is probably at the light fixture. Are you blowing fuses or does the light simply not work?

The light doesn't work (even after changing bulbs), and I'm periodically blowing fuses. However, my stern light is working fine (they should be on the same circut).

Whoops, I did it again. Check first question. Due to simplicity, lack of space and cost, do not consider a marine head on a Hunbter 23 wing keel. As for any light bulbs blowing, that would indicate the hot wire is touching another hot somewhere. Check your wiring behind the electrical panel or where it goes into the bow rail. Crazy Dave

My only guesses, if it's a fitting in the bottom of the boat--below the waterline--it might be a transducer for a knot log or depth finder...but I DO I know what it isn't: it has absolutely nothing to do with a marine toilet. As for installing a head and holding tank on a 24' boat, there are a couple of things to consider: A marine toilet uses a great deal more flush water than a portapotty, which means a holding tank big enough to give you appreciably more capacity (number of flushes) than you may already have will occupy a good bit of your storage space...how much are you willing to give up? There are bigger and better portapotties than the small 2-3 gal. models that you have to carry up the dock...5-6 gallon models that can be pumped out OR carried off the boat offer the eqivilant number of flushes to a manual marine toilet and a 12-15 gallon holding tank. Thetford even makes an "electric" model that uses 6 D-cells. So my advice: investigate all your options before you decide that only a marine toilet and holding tank will do. And if that IS your ultimate conclusion, I'll be glad to help you spec out the installation.
