My non-boating weekend

Since there's not much activity in this particular category I'd thought I'd contribute.

I own a 1976 Triumph TR6 that I'm getting ready to sell to defray the purchase price of our boat. To my dismay, I discovered that it is leaking a lot of oil (even for a British car) at the rear of the engine. I checked the clutch slave cylinder hoping it was hydraulic fluid but no such luck--the outside of the slave cylinder was dry. The only thing left to do was replace the rear main seal...right? The transmission on these cars comes out through the interior. So Saturday I removed seats, carpet, steering wheel and transmission cover. Then I pulled the transmission, clutch and flywheel only to discover that the rear main seal is fine. The oil leak is coming from somewhere north of the bell housing. Now I get to put it all back together. Two steps forward, one step back. Or is that two steps backward...whatever.

Well my friend there are days when I am glad to own my lil mule...aka 72 Porsche 914-6........ When I need to check the engine, I just drop it all out the bottom and wheel it out...... (I've done that too many times! )

Ahh, brings back memories of my '77 and '69 spitfires. Yup, pulled the tranny through the passenger compartment many times. The '77 was a full restoration and the '69 was a stock(mostly) road race car. I drove Bridgehampton just before they destroyed it. Some fun times back in the 90s.

I few years back I had a TR8 and rebuilt the V8 and my wife would drive it and tease guys in Corvettes. Eventually she would just pull away from them in the turns and give 'em a little wave.

Living aboard seriously limits my automotive hobby but I love most anything with wheels so now I spend non boating weekends on my mountain bike. Much healthier too.

I remember my '66 MGB roadster. British cars keep you under the hood for sure....but boy what fun. I knew that car from bumper to bumper. Like my boat, I never minded working on my "B".

My first car was a '67 Spitfire. The Spitfire had that independent rear suspension with a transverse leaf spring. I had to replace the half axle going into the rear a couple of times.

And that positive ground meant that my 'state of the art' auto-reverse cassette deck had to be wired directly to the battery.

But hey, it was a convertible. Unfortunately I had to throw my Snark Mach II on top of the family station wagon when I wanted to go sailing.
