....I plan on installing a dedicated supply just for the fridge, near the aft end of the starboard settee somewhere, but it needs to work better than what I have now.
Ideas??

We have wiring from a .......

....a fused terminal that is only used for the frig back to a toggle switch at the bottom ...

...aft end of the starboard settee (bottom left arrow above). From the switch it goes to a female socket under the settee.

I take the frig cord through....

.... a hole in the sole behind the settee, top arrow and from there to the plug that is about where the left arrow is. This way we can pull the cord and frig out if we want to (it is out now and in the Suburban). We turn the frig off at night with the toggle switch.

I put the frig wire/plug....

...inside some loom material to protect it from the edges of the hole. There is more on the mounting here...

Your mention of the plug getting hot doesn't sound good. Either related to the connection itself and/or the frig having a problem???

I received my new fridge last week and finally got it in the boat today.
I went ahead and ran a new permanent wire and plug from over the galley, down and under the galley and back to the aft side of the starboard settee.
It's warm here today, about 85 or so. I plugged it it to the 12 volt and it started right up. As far as I can tell it pulled about 3.5-4.5 amps.
I think this one works the way it's supposed to.
Now I can work on adding in the extra solar and I'm ready for the water.

Update,
I finally got the boat wet yesterday.
It feels like it's been a long time, felt good to be on the water again.
We only went out for the day, so it wasn't much of a test but the batteries appeared to be about as strong when we went home as they were when we left.
The fridge is set at about 32 deg now. Just over the point where things start to crystal up.
From playing with the temps I learned not to set it using unopened soda bottles.
They will be ok, when the opened ones freeze up solid at the same temp!
During my day I looked in at the amp meter a lot and saw numbers ranging from Neg. 2 or 3 to a Pos. 1 or 2. It was easy to see when the fridge was on and off. Not sure what the voltage was but looked to always be around 12.5-13 or so.
I still am only running on one 50 watt panel and the cheap controller.
It was real nice to be able to have lunch making stuff in the fridge and not have to deal with melting ice and waterlogged food! I think the fridge mod ranks right up there with the auto pilot in terms of cool points.

Thanks for the update. We are in Florida living on the Endeavour up on stands in the yard working on her and have our frig in the boat and using it with no problems. We also used it in the Suburban on the way down here. The frig has made long distance, many day cruises practical for us and like you has been one of the best mods.

I made a frig for the Endeavour and hope to have it in and working in a couple more days and that will allow us to move the Edgestar out of the cabin.

Interesting update on my fridge.
So far I've only had it on batteries for 1, day-sail and the batteries seemed like they were still full when we came back. Not much of a test.
This weekend I took it off AC power at 10:00am Saturday. It ran on the 2 boat batteries and the 50 watt solar panel all day, all night, and I checked it at 5:00pm Sunday and my volt meter still showed 13 volts.
The fridge had already reached it's cut out point and was just coasting, so that voltage was with no load.
I'm not sure how much that means, but I was surprised. I thought after running all night the batteries would have been low. Very encouraging.
Next test, holiday weekend coming up so I can do a longer test.
