I've always had too many flares for the round orange flare container, so they end up in two (at least) places. This would not be ideal in an emergency. I recently saw an old make-up case in someone's garbage and a light went on. Twenty minutes yesterday and some Krylon paint for plastic that I had. This thing practically glows.

Ahhh...

is the Albermarle that shallow that you guys need to carry that many flares around, "just in case"??? :)

I put several older flares and another gun in a yellow plastic Nestle chocolate mix container and labeled the top with a permanent marker. Worked perfect.

Dan, its not that shallow, but with the gun and its shells, some hand held flares, some aerial flares, whistle, signaling mirror, and spare flares I'll have it all in one place. It will also be very easy for me or anyone else to find quickly.

I Seal-A-Meal them with the vacuum sealer that way I can store them without worrying about moisture and they can live in a convenient place. BTW I also do that with the out dated Aerial flares.

Safety Items still in Sealed Packaging

PFDs and flares still in the original package can not be counted against the required inventory. I imagine the same is true for ones resealed. A ziploc bag might be a better way to go. For any extras or for the expired ones on the boat it would not matter.

Was joking of course! The Chesapeake is probably just as shallow in most places.

I have an Olin canister hanging below my nav table with gun and all current flares. Spares and out-of-date ones are in the cabinet immediately in front of the canister and a mirror, secondary air horns, and a laser signaling device are immediately above in the nav table's liquor bin. Whistles and strobes are attached to our primary PFDs.

A friend uses an old 50 cal. metal case painted orange. Others use an old small tackle box or tool box. Rather than what it's in, more important is ease of access and having everyone aboard know where that is as you noted.

It Just Occured to me

Your flare container should float. The cosmetic case probbaly will but I am not so sure about an ammo can would. You know on the other hand I think it would if it has a good seal.

Just somthing else to consider.
