My least favorite time of year...

Well folks...it's that time again. For those of us in the northern areas its time to cut the deposit check for our winter storage and to book a date for haul out. :cry:

My Wife and I booked a vacation to Antigua for the week of Oct. 20th. So that forces me to think about setting a date, even though I have no desire to. I am still more focused on trying to get out sailing as often as possible, but it is getting dark around 7pm now. At least it has been fairly windy.

Mentally I am still in denial though I better cut that check today.

I saw the (Kevin) Bacon Brothers concert last night. They introduced a new song, written from the perspective of a guy that lives in Boston: "Why do New England Girls Love Florida?". Sailing all year, no doubt?

I've never understood the rush to haul inthe Chesapeake.

I have sailed all year for 25 years. The ONLY season I had damage was the one that I hauled. I believe regular use is best.

Further north - that is different.

Good news bad news for me this year. The bad news is that I lost my beautiful boat shed. The wharf owner needs the space. The good news is that he also wanted the shed so he paid me more than the cost of the materials. This relieves me of all the work and complex logistics having a fixed haul and transport date and getting the shed buttoned up so the wind doesn't get in under it. I can just drop the boat off at the yard when I get tired of the cold weather and they'll take care of it from there.

Bad news: I won't be able to do a lot of those cosmetic upgrades and projects I'd planned. Good news: I won't be spending so much money on the boat.

If I can just get rid of this damned cold that's keeping me off the water on this perfect fall day, there should still be another six weeks of sailing. That's longer than the number of dry days we had prior to Labor Day.

Warren, you still have two months to go!! When I had my boat at Herrington North, I went out January 2nd, and it was 70 degrees. Keep the faith, fella.

no need to haul here except to redo the bottom etc. We sailed and spent the night last february when we had 70's and night was in the 60's, that was the last time we used sailed our old boat... was a great weekend for Feb!

well I am glad that it is finally cooling off some and the wind has returned. Fall and spring are the best times to sail in the south. Fall is probably the best as the water is warm enough to swim until mid October. Of course we sail year round but can only swim april through ocotober....well some years late March through early Novemeber. But you have to be hardy to swim late March as the water is only about 70 degrees.

Does it ever get warm in Boston??? I was visiting there in June and about froze. After Birminghams 90 degree weather highs of 65 felt very cool!!! I noticed that it was 75 degrees at 7 am this morning looking at the thermometer in the car. But tonight it is supposed to get down in the 60's brrrrr!!!

I noticed that it was 75 degrees at 7 am this morning looking at the thermometer in the car. But tonight it is supposed to get down in the 60's brrrrr!!!

We have our haul out date booked up here for Oct 17, today we had 48Degrees for a high and expected to drop to the low 40s tonight....so I'll take 60s any day

I put my check in the mail yesterday (for half...$900...up a buck to $60/foot) with my form and dates and the marina actually called me too to see if I wanted to reserve my spot. So I am probably coming out the 13th. Summers are so short and winters seem so long. I think I drove my 64 Dart convertible 3 times and still haven't gotten a current inspection sticker. I am going to make a clean break though...boat out...vacation in Antigua...then back for Halloween.

Went out today for a short sail, it was 43 D f, after an hour we started to turn back and was greeted by gusty winds up to 20knts, can't say it was realy fun , but it was an adventure in my 23'er.

Don't forget to drop your traveler to leward to spill more wind out if you have a reef in and are still getting overpowered. I was going to go out Tuesday, but got trapped at work and it was 15-20 with gusts to 25 and a small craft advisory. Perfect sailing weather, but I definitely would have reefed.
