Help! The fin keel on my 33' 1979 Hunter has fallen off. I'm going to hire a salvage guy to go down under the buoy and see if he can find it down there. I can't afford a new keel. What are my options if I can't find the old one? Is there a Cherubini graveyard near Olympia, WA where I can get another for cheap? Can anyone recommend a likely source? How close of a match do I need and will keels from other boats work? Thanks,

Keel Fell Off????

Steve Never mind about where to get a new one!! Why did the old one fall off? What happened? I hope you hit something and it did not just "fall off". I have a H37C a few miles north of you. If you have "keel-fall-offites" I hope it is not contagious. I am sure Ed will know where to get a new one but I would start with Hunter. If they do not have a source they should at least have the specs. Fair winds. Don

Theres someplace in Canada

where you can send it to have new bolts put in. If it fell off the bolts not the glass were most likely the problem. Check the archives.

did the bolts fail, the fiberglass, was it floating or sailing when it dropped, did it roll over , is this post for real? Find it and bed it on with Dupont 5200. Then you don't need no stinkin bolts

Kevin, who told you this could not occur?

Stephen: I believe that this is what insurance is for! They cover accidents and mistakes! Let the insurance company buy one or find the old one themselves!

Stephen How did you find out the keel

fell off. I would think if the bolts failed at the keel then you would not Develop too much of a leak. If your boat did not sink I would think that this is what happened. Did you have a sacrificial anode on the boat? Stainless steel as I’m sure you know can corrode but I’m surprised you did not notice a loose keel or something before this happened. (Although I've heard of other people this happened to.) Anyway I have heard of people using large lag bolts to replace bad keel bolts but if your keels off I’d have it done right. You can often tell if you have a bad keel bolt by striking the top of the bolt with a ball peen hammer. If the hammer bounces back at you and makes a sharp noise then chances are it’s OK. Here is one site that will repair bad keel bolts for you. http://www.keelboltrepair.com/

I don't know what happened

I'm pretty sure I didn't hit anything, I do recall motoring along and feeling a little jolt once, thought it was just my imagination at the time. That was a while back, and I didn't notice any different handling afterward. I know the keel is now off because I've had two guys look and it's not there! Plus the boat bobs around like nuts. The boat is not currently leaking. In the bilge the bolts and nuts look normal. The guy who does salvage around here is sick atm so he won't get out there and dive for a few days. But if he finds it down below the buoy then it would seem it did just fall off. The PO let the boat sit without zincs for years. I don't currently have insurance! Anyone with any ideas about a replacement keel in case he can't find it?? Hunter, Don? Do they have a database of junked 33's? Thanks! Stephen

Mars Metal

Pretty sure that Mars Metal made the original keel. Give them a call(Related Link) and see. Regardless who made it a new one will be very costly. It is amazing that the keel separated from the boat and you have no leaks. Those are large stainless bolts with an 'L' shape imbedded deep in the lead. Hard to imagine how the keel would pull away from those bolts. Hopefully by now you have had the boat hauled and are looking at the bottom for the answer.
