Well, I just had the boat taken out to water this weekend. This has been my first year of owning and sailing my own boat. What a fantastic season it has been!

I guess I have made just about every mistake you can think of, and I probably came up with a few new ones. Boat ownership has been quite an experience. I learned the joys of sanding and scrapping the hull in preparation of applying bottom paint. I discovered the pleasure of cleaning, sanding and oiling teak until it yields that rich chocolate brown color. I discovered that it is awfully difficult to back out of your slip and then maneuver the boat after the sheer pin breaks. I was very proud of myself after installing cleats on the bow, cam cleats for the jib sheets and wiring in a fish finder (All done after searching the archives for instruction!). While these are not exactly rocket scientist modifications, it really made me feel like the boat is more than just an appliance. I guess you become proud of it!

They were few experiences in life better than the first day I motored out of the marina, turned the bow into the wind, raised the sails and the boat actually sailed! That feeling of gliding across the water noiselessly and effortlessly was exquisite!

Luckily, my wife enjoys sailing too, so in addition to sailing around our area, we have also spent many lazy Sunday afternoons anchored in a quiet (and sometimes not so quite cove) and shared a picnic lunch and a bit of wine. I’ve taken many friends out for their first sail, and most of them have asked to go out again.

I discovered a whole new group of people who love this thing called sailing that I have just started and have made many new friends. Mostly, I want to thank all of you who have so generously shared your knowledge and experiences. While I am not a very ‘vocal’ participant with lots of postings (I don’t feel I have the experience yet to contribute much), I am a very active reader and make sure I check into the site at least once daily.

All in all, this has been one of my best summers ever. I have already put my down payment on the slip for next year and am planning what upgrades to work on this winter!

Congratulations...

I hope you potted the fastener holes when you installed the cam cleats and cleats, at least if they were going through cored deck. Also, hope you used decent backing plates for the cleats.

What projects do you have lined up for this winter?

First year

Great post Louis! It was my first season too. Only complaint is that it's over. Now we can dream about April. Enjoy the winter. I too have learned so much from this site. Thank you all!

Re: First year

Glad you guys had a great first season. Our first season was cut short by Nancy's Cancer diaganosis and treatment. Boating has gotten better every year since then and this year has been great so far. We won't haul out before thanksgiving.

Well it isn't my first year!!!! I bought my first sailboat in 1974. My last sailboat was purchased five years ago. Had four boats in between the first ans last. Here in Alabama the season is not over...heck it is never over as most sailers sail year round. But I still get those special feelings when sailing!!!!! Sail on!!!! We hope to retire and go cruising in the spring of 2009!!!!!! WOW!!!!! The last month that we plan on working is April 2009.. Sell the house and load up the boat and go. Maybe even get to meet Ross in Perryville,MD . We probably won't make it up to the Chesapeake in 2009 but the summer of 2010.

My First Keel Boat Year

It was my first keel boat year. Found a great in need of repair '80 Mac M25 with sails and motor. It has been quiet a summer getting everything into shape to put her in the water. Boy, I can not say more about that first time on the lake and raising the sails. I was fortunate to be able to at least get in 5 times before the cold is setting in up here in Madison. I am blessed with a girlfriend that thinks sailing is addictive. Waiting for Spring...

My first season

also. The season went by way too quickly:cry: I only wish I could sail all winter also. Yes that first time you raise the sails by yourself and are actually sailing with the power of the wind is a wonderful experience:D. Now I too have winter projects ahead of me I would like to make a set of wood crib boards along with all the other cleaning and prep work.

New sailors

Great to see so much "new blood"
I'm sure you all will be contributing soon as no one can operate a sailboat and not get an experience. Much better than those "slip locked" folks that come to the boat so they can watch TV while at the dock!
As for the season being over. I had a really rich friend tell me once "watch what other folks are doing and do the opposite." Here in Maryland there are some GREAT sailing days in November, December and January and if you have a Bimini with side covers (or a great set of snivel gear) there is always the frostbite series to participate in. It really has the best racing as ONLY the hard core attempt going out between December and February. March is one of the best months to sail in (reefed most of the time)(and blue from the windchill), provided the bay is not frozen.

See you on the waters!

It's great to hear about early experiences ...

All of you new sailors, don't be shy about posting your comments and questions. You would be surprised how much everybody enjoys sharing knowledge and information. Besides, we are all pretty much on the learning curve ... no matter how long we have been at it! Fresh voices are always welcome.

Louis, our season ended very early in September this year due to the once in every 6 year drawdown where our water level is down at least 5 feet and it was necessary to get her out. I was really tempted to move Thunderbird over to the Hudson River. Instead, I've been doing more boat projects while on hard. What marina are you at? How has your experience there been? We are thinking about moving to Haverstraw for convenience and the level of activity. I would love to hear your comments about the Hudson if you are up around the Tappen Zee!

I think you will find

As you sail more, and meet more sailing people out there, I think you will find that as a whole, there are no better, more friendly and helpful folks anywhere.
This board is a fine example, as everyone on here is friendly and helpful most of the time. Of course, sometimes someone attacks a keyboard without their morning coffee and can be a little grumpy, but overall everyone on this board is a winner, and you will be proud to call them friends.

Congratulations... you will learns many new things in the years too come. Be prepared for you house to fall into the ground (unless you rent)... as you are working on the boat!

I think we all would like to return to "THAT FIRST YEAR"!
