Check the tidal flow on the Sound.
We sailed the LI Sound a few years back and quckly learned that there is a strong tidal flow current to deal with. We roughly calculated an average of 3.5 knot current. On the way back to Northport we had to sail all the way out to the Connecticut shore to be able to tack back in and make some headway. On the other hand we did 80 NM in 10 hrs one day taking adavantage of the current. Because of weather concerns I would allow more time for such a trip. If you are restrained to one week just do the north shore. Going to Greenport is a must.
