floatation if it should capsize. most people remove all or part of it. I guess if you plan to sail open ocean you might want to keep it but otherwise....... nah. don't need it.

Welcome to the forum overkill. I too have a Mac 25. I see no reason to remove the foam blocks. I hope I never do anything to test them though lol.

It may be dual purpose, an attempt to make the boat unsinkable and to support the v-berth. That large flat surface needs to be well supported or very thick. That big chuck of foam in the middle looks like was placed to support the v-berth.

Just replaced the bow eye on my Mac 25. There are dozens of small pieces of Styrofoam in that space .
I do hit open ocean and keep all of the Styrofoam in place. Hopefully I will never use it.
