Unfortunately a friend of mine is getting divorced and his Freedom 28 is up for sale. He confided in me that he plans to try living aboard and has been discussing what to buy with me. After months of discussions he finally focused on a few boats.

Beneteau 393 or 411 (he liked to pullman berth and vee head)
Freedom 40 (still a big Freedom fan, but they are mid-90's vintage and he preferred newer)
Jeanneau 39DS (a 2007 leftover at the top of his price range of $100-$170K)

I kept telling him that this was perhaps a once in a lifetime opportunity to buy a brand new boat. He filled out a loan application for the 39DS today after looking at the other boats last weekend. :clap:

I ask you...what are friends for?

Also, I wanted to see if you like, dislike or are at least intrigued by the cat's eye look of the 39DS.

25 years ago traditionalists thought that the wide beam boats at centerline were due to fail - then they carried that wide beam aft and made it even wider - people seem to like it, it's in all what you like

I think it's ugly. What's the point of asking us...... either you like or you don't... BTW only TIME will TELL if the design stands the TEST of TIME. If anyone here has the gift on predicting the future....... speak up. BTW... if this design was popular there would be a waiting list to get one. Just ask Island Packet.

As a traditional type guy, I don't care for the look of the 39DS. So you are going into a partnership?

I'd go with the Freedom! We had a Freedom 21, had friends with 25s and 28s. I don't know-something really neat about those Freedoms.

...she's a Doctor...and he is living aboard so no apartment or house to pay for.

I am not involved...other than encouraging him to buy what he truly wants if he can afford it. It turns out that there is some good financing available now too. Plus, because it is a leftover he is getting a price that will make the payments only a few hundred more a month over a ten year old boat of the same length.

That and he will need some crew to move her from Hingham to a good liveaboard marina in Boston proper in December. Anyone else up for a harbor cruise in Boston in December? Brrrrrrr. :eek: At least there is a cabin heater. :)

No thanks! Cold enough helping a buddy move his 42' Catalina from Annapolis to DC in January...

I'd be inclined to go with the 39DS. You stated he's going to be living on it. He'll want the most space below possible, especially in a cold climate. Also, it's new. After divorce is a rebuilding time - or he'd be living on land - and he'll spend less time repairing the boat systems or paying to repair them. He didn't ask how it sails or if its a good boat to take to the Carib. But to live on, space is king. By the way, if the heater is one of the AV/Heat units common on these boats, don't count on much heat if the water temp is below 55.

I'll leave aesthetic comments for others, but

as far as function goes, I'd hate to navigate that deck when it's pitching hard. Also, I'll take a functional slotted aluminum toe-rail any day over all those linear feet of teak.

He wanted me to buy it, but wasn't ready to sell last year when I bought my 9.2A...apparently because of the pending divorce. Oh well, the Freedom 28 is a marvelous boat to sail, but I was aboard it recently and whacked my head twice on the turn of the deckhouse when I went to sit on the settee, so I don't think it would have worked for me anyway.

Amen to that, and that is exactly what I had in mind. This could be the one point in the remainder of his life in which he is the sole decision maker. It could be now or never. The single ladies are swarming around him already!

I would guess he's buying it from Eastern Yacht Sales. Great brokerage with Catalina's, Jeanneau's & Island Packet's sitting side by side. Did he look at the Catalina 387? There is a Jeanneau in my mooring field, probably 39DS. I do admire her when the launch goes by as I do any most boats. I'm not sure I like those large windows from the outside but from your video they look good from the inside. My eyes always go back to the classic look of the Cape Dory's.

After all the stories I have either read or heard describing problems people have had with brand new boats, there is no way I would even consider buying brand new. If money were no object, I'd be much more inclined to get something that is a few years old, has had the bugs worked out of it, and that has a track record of functioning systems and the ability to float.

I agree with Gail and Joe stick with the tried and true Namely the freedom The look of the New boat is not to my taste but that does not mean it wont suit someone else. As far as a crew goes to move a boat from Hingham to a marina in Boston harbor. This is an hour or so
motoring trip
