I can promise you one thing. The dawg won't be able to hold it forever. Just make sure he's in the cockpit when he has no choice.
Sooner or later yeah, but hate to see him suffer till he does...

Would also like to to train him to cut down on the dingy trips on the short runs too...

That's good to know, I've been hearing every thing from a day and a half to 3 days to make the trip...suppose it depends on which way the wind is blowing and how strong...

Might have to start at 4 and motor till the wind picks up.. I only have a 4-5 kt boat not one of them fancy racing models...
For passagemaking we often choose to make our target speed; the speed I used to plan the crossing. Its a function of your boat's typical crusing speed, and how much you're willing to have your motor on. For us, thats 5 knots. If we are not making 5 knots VMG towards the desitination, we motor sail. Thanksfully that for us is usually only when the breeze is below 5 knots.

Your target will probaly be slightly below 4 knots, or 4 if you don't mind motoring.

Rhumb line distance to Washington Harbor is 100nm from your marina and 70 from Stockton Island. I'd spend a night at Jullian Bay, and head out before dawn for the park. Gets you in in daylight hours, and the sun rising over Lake Superior is magical.

I've trained 3 dogs to go on boat. Takes 2 minutes. Glycerin suppositories. Keep dog on boat 24 hrs. We took dog to foredeck on a leash. One of us held dog while other inserted suppository in dogs anus. Within short time dog poops. Give praises & treat. Dog will then poop & pee in same place. There are dif sizes suppositories. We never allowed dogs to go to foredeck while underway unless on a leash. The frequency of praises & treats can diminish over time.

So Washington harbor is the place to head...? Any other spots on the "must see" list for a short (couple day) excursion..?

My buddies lab will only go on real turff, so we bring a piece and he's happy as a clam.

From the Apostles, Washington Harbor is your landfall for sure. And it offers proper docking and supplies. If you don't want to go all the way down the 3.5 mile channel (more like a fjord) to the dock, you can anchor in the Hurricane hole at Johnson Island just outside the entrance, but that's not a job to do at night. The SS America sank nearby.... its rocky.

Remember that unless you sail straight across, you are looking at a minimum 5 day trip. So for a short one, I would stay on the SW side, perhaps going as far NE as spectacular Chippewa Harbor. But not to be missed is the natural Jacuzzi at Malone Bay.

It's bucket-list sailing, and an adventure of high order. The lighthouses alone make it special. Plan you crossing with a good weather window and you'll be golden. Also make sure that you have time to delay (or leave early) depending on conditions. We've crossed in absolutely ideal sailing conditions, and some that were rather sporty.

I'm sure you have it in chart form, but just in case, here is a very hi-rez version of the NOAA chart

Thanks for the pictures Jackdaw. I was looking at Isle Royale and some of the pictures posted on Google Earth and you sure have some beautiful sailing waters up there.
Now I better understand why you people put up with that cold weather.

CA,

Thanks! As Squidd will tell you, the Apostles are beautiful, but their relatively easy access from the Twin Cities, Milwaukee and Chicago means that many of the 1200 sailboats in the area are out with you. It's not uncommon to see 40 of them any given day, and spend the night with two dozen of them at one of the more popular anchorages.

But 70-100NM away things get spectacular; a National Park that sees the fewest visitors of any in the system. And even they are all backpackers, kayakers, or boaters. We go days without seeing anyone, save the occasionally hiker if we anchor in a land-side cove. We offer up a cold beer and we've made a friend for life!

If you stay in a cove on one of the attached islands, you are guaranteed privacy. Last trip we crossed the 75nm from Houghton with some friends that were coming back from Chicago... they took the picture of us in the waves. We got to the park, and then split up. We didn't hear from them again until we overheard a radio call they made to the ranger station; they were pulling out nearby and ran up on a reef! Stuck hard. We ended up going over, creeping in, and pulling them off. The Rangers brought us the beer that night. I was making a vid of the morning when the call came in...

Pigeon Point

Jackdaw, have you ever poked around Pigeon Point? During a summer in the 70's, I worked on a survey crew and we set monuments all over the peninsula. We took boats from Grand Portage and landed in Hole in the Wall. There were a few afternoons on the way back when I thought for sure I'd draw my last breath in the cold water.

I'd love to go back by sailboat and visit Isle Royale, Grand Portage and Grand Marais. I'm sure it's changed a lot since then. The locals didn't think very highly of BWCA in those days.

Consult with a Vet as he may know of something that may stimulate the dog to go. Holding it in for long periods of time is not good for anyone.

I have the same problem right now. I've set out a 2X3 turf mat outside my house along the walk for about 3 months now in the hopes that it would pick up an "earthy smell" as well as be marked by multiple passing dogs. We've been told this is one way to get the turf pad feeling more like a real patch of grass.

We have been mostly day sailing for the last few months so no extended cruises or overnights to try it out but we're hoping she will get the idea. She goes on command at home and even "fakes a few" just for a treat so I'm sure once she gets the idea it's okay we will be good to go. Good luck and let us know how it goes in case my attempt fails.
