My Dog Won't Pee on the Boat

What's a fella to do..?

I mean it's a good habit to have at home (not peeing in the house) but becomes inconvenient out on the boat...

Been sailing the Apostle Islands, Lake Superior so we generally can get him to shore once or twice a day, lot of the islands have public piers I can get into, but we prefer to anchor out, which means launching the dingy and rowing to shore for doggy duty...

He can hold it for awhile, usually we hit shore in the morning and around supper time and sometimes the morning romp waits till noon if were heading to another island early in the morn.

But next season I'd like to take a trip from Bayfield to Isle Royal which means a good 48 hrs on open water...

We've put him in the cockpit and waited but nothing ever happens, he'll just look over the coaming at the trees on the islands and wimper softly...

Any suggestions on getting him to "go"..?

I'm sure if we wait "long enough" something will happen, but I'd like to train him to go on a regular basis on the cockpit floor so I can reduce the number of trips in the dingy..

Lay out a smallish piece of fake turf in the cockpit to coax him?

Maybe try taking a piece of astro tuff with you when he pees on shore and rub the turf in his piss. Take it onboard on lay it in the cockpit. He may think he pee'd there before and got away with it and will do it again. Better yet, rub it in another dogs pee.....I bet he will pee on it then :)

we tried the potty pad and his pee when we first got him home...never got the hang of it....

Eventually we trained him (or he trained us) to go to the door and let his intentions be known...

will have to try again with the astro/pad on the boat..

I like the idea of another dogs pee spot cause he sure scopes them out when were on shore....

Have you tried showing him? There is an old and New Yorker cartoon (one of my favorites) of a man sitting on a park bench, a dog lifts his leg and pees on the bench. The man gets up and goes over to nearby tree and pees on it. The dog sees him, stands on his hind legs and proceeds to pee, yet again, on the park bench. Lesson learned.

Might try actual soil in a flat style plastic container. You pee in it, or, shovel soil with his pee or another dogs. Real dirt may do it. Even if it doesn't, you'll have a place to pee!!!!!! Chief

I hate to admit it, but I tried peeing in the cockpit hoping he'd get the hint...

He just gave me a look like " if I tried that at home...you'd rub my nose in it"...

Could've been worse - our dog ate the pads. Lots of dinghy trips to shore before he realized that the deck was as good of a place as any.

You might first want to train the dog to "pee on command". Even old dogs can learn this.

If you do a websearch for "pee + on + command" you find lots and varied methods.
example: http://thedo.gs/2012/12/training/5-steps-to-teaching-your-dog-to-pee-on-command-27761/7481/ ... http://wn.com/dog_training__how_to_train_a_dog_to_pee_and_poop_on_command
If one technique doesnt work, then simply try another until you find a method that does work. Persistence, encouragement and 'gentle' is the key.

Then I would highly recommend something like this on the foredeck and which has all the in-bult 'pre-stink' included in the turf and a two+ day capacity for the liquid waste: http://www.amazon.com/Potty-Patch-S...8&qid=1418255479&sr=8-10&keywords=potty+patch

You can't bring your dog to Isle Royale. NPS reg. Not even into park waters.

Really... that might put a damper on the trip...

Actually, he's not like a regular dog...more like a large hamster..;)

Likewise it's been a while since I had a dog - 'though I'd like one. I wonder if the dog may be confused by your pee, since they mark territory via pee. Maybe you should put some of the pooch's pee on a grass matt, or whatever, then maybe he'll get it's OK. Gotta love the critters because all they want to do is be part of the pack - the family. To think of that guy holding it all that time so as to not displease you - I hope you find a solution.

That's what I was envisioning something like a puppy size potty patch...

He doesn't go up on the deck, pretty much stays in the cockpit or down in the saloon...

Shush....

.... went everywhere almost with me for 16 years and I'd get tired of waiting for her at gas stations to do her thing so finally did work on training her and she got to the point she would do either on command. Just work on it and use whatever word you want for either and then keep rewarding the dog as she/he does it,

Yeah. It's that whole Wolf/moose ecosystem thing they have going there. I remember once the Rangers got whiff of a power cruiser coming in with a dog on board, and they went to meet it with one of their high-speed patrol boats!

Isle Royale shouldn't take you 48 hours, that would be the voyage of the damned. Best if you jump off from say Stockton Island, and then leave very early, like 5am. With enough luck you'll make it before dark. You do not want to go into Washington Harbor after dark.

I can promise you one thing. The dawg won't be able to hold it forever. Just make sure he's in the cockpit when he has no choice.

That's good to know, I've been hearing every thing from a day and a half to 3 days to make the trip...suppose it depends on which way the wind is blowing and how strong...

Might have to start at 4 and motor till the wind picks up.. I only have a 4-5 kt boat not one of them fancy racing models...
