For no apparent reason, my centerboard keeps getting stuck up. I have to jump up and down to get it to release. Can anyone tell me 1) Why? and 2) how to fix it?

Snooty Centreboards

There are likely only a few reasons why this has happened. Either something now resided in the well, such as barnacles, or muck jammed at the top of the well, to impede the CB, or the board has swelled due to the board absorbing water. There is not a lot of room in the CB slot so it doesn't take much for it to jam. The slot also likely narrows at the top so keeping the slot clean is critical. If you can raise the boat on a trailer or stand a bit to drop the board down and get a high pressure hose in there to clean out any gunk it might be enough. If not then you will have to remove the board and dry it out and repair the split that is likely allowing water to penetrate the inside of the board an making it swell. This repair is not difficult and has been reported by others and a description is in the archives. If you get to this stage write back for further help. You will also want to get bottom paint up inside the CB slot to reduce marine fouling before you reassemble everything. What model boat are you talking about? Don
