Maynard Ferguson

Love to hear the screaming horn of Maynard Ferguson while waking the kids up in the morning or drowning out any parrotheads in the anchorage. Can't take Jimmy Buffet but sail with a real parrot. Russell S/V Allie Kat

Stan Rogers rules the waves...

Stan Rogers is incredible. Home in Halifax is arguably his finest sailor-type album, but all are terrific. He makes Buffet sound like an amateur, IMHO. Give him a try! Gary B.

Buena Vista Social Club!!!

They are absolutely fantastic! I picked up a similar CD at Starbucks called Cafe Cubana and it features some of the BVSC singers. Also fantastic! LaDonna

ANYTHING GOES!

Installed a new pair of cockpit speakers last year. Have the typical cassete/receiver. Want to add a CD changer this season and I'll be all set to listen to some mellow sounds. I listen to anything! Bill on STARGAZER

Hey LaDonna

I saw Buena Vista a couple of weeks ago here in Knoxville. It may have been the Best concert I've seen ever! I have a Bonnie Raitt tape in the deck on my boat. I saw her at the same venue a couple of months ago. I love Bonnie BUT BVSC was out of this world. Later, mike

Rap music seems to get things going very well on the water, whether your crusing or racing. The up tempo beat and lyrics really keep you moving.

Sailing Sounds

Sometimes the sounds of the sails, the water on the hull, and the other boating activity is just what the "doctor" ordered and there is no need or thought of augmenting those sounds. However, "Dock of the Bay" by Otis Redding, "Sloop John B", "Sailing" etc. certainly have their place on my list. Smooth jazz on the radio is welcome, and so is classical music. Rappers are left at the dock!

I'm trying XM satellite radio for variety

Music on our boat (and around the house) is essential. I keep about 60 of my favorite CD's on board (jazz, pop, classical) but I found I knew them all so well that I was getting bored with them. So, I have just purchased a Delphi XM satellite radio, and am looking forward to the variety of their 100 channels. I have the unit working at home and am impressed so far. Hope it works as well on the boat. Derek

A unique radio station

Here in Austin we have one of the best radio stations I have ever had the pleasure of listening to - 107.1 KGSR. They are co-sponsors of Austin City Limits, among other fine programs, and spin really good music. What do they play? Well, some call it alt-country, others call it roots rock. I call it a combination of folk rock and hippie-country. It's kind of hard to understand it unless you have spent some time on the lake just relaxing to it and getting familiar with the artists on the play list: Patti Griffin, Eliza Gilkeyson, Bruce Robison, Kelly Willis, The Gourds, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, Greateful Dead, Bob Marley.. etc.. You'll find nothing from Nashville(thank God), and just about every song is acoustic based and rocking. The previous owner turned me on to the station, and that was about his only good tip. p.s. - before you start in on the country music jokes, I only moved to Austin 6 years ago and a former New Yorker.

What about 'new age'

ya know, Enya (sp?), Manheim Steamroller! And of coarse late 60's early 70's Rock. I save the Classical for when we're tied up, or swinging on the hook. Stay safe, tom s/v GAIA

Keep Texas Beautiful...

Put a Yankee on a northbound bus. Sorry, Rob had to get that off my chest, you should have lived in Austin 30 years ago before the secret was out and the place was flooded by folks from all over. I'll share a couple of my favorite places besides the lake, Mt Bonnel and there was probably still is a bar just below the Mansfield Dam across the street from the LCRA building. You left out a couple of my favorite artists David Earl Keene and an old neighbor out in Oak Hill Jerry Jeff Walker. I sure miss it there.

If music be the food of love, sail on

As the saying goes " If music be the food of love, sail on" My suggestions are: 1. Try Wagner for sailing closehauled, with the toerail buried. 2. If jazz is your thing, sail upwind to the sounds of Charlie Parker's "Birdland". You may never sail downwind again. 3.Anything by Bob Marley to get you in the island groove on your next Caribbean charter. (this works best on a beam reach or farther off the wind.) 4. Stock up on Bach for quiet nights at anchor. 5. Anchor music- anything by Diana Krall is a must-have for an evening with your significant other. 6. "Ride of the Valkyries" as in the helicopter scene in APOCALYPSE NOW -if your looking to get noticed leaving your slip, harbor, mooring etc. Played loudly this will definitely turn heads-I never tried this but seems likely!!

Racing song, and more

And - a great song to be blasting as you hit the starting line of a friendly race is Meatloaf's "Bat Out Of Hell". For all of you Jimmy Buffett fans (I know, I am one), check out Jim Morris and the Big Bamboo Band - he has some great songs about sailing - "The Sailboat Race", about bringing on the guy who has never raced before to round out the crew. Based on a semi-true story, about the guy who wanted to leave some sails on the dock to make more room for drinks, and who "put a life jacket around a case of spiced rum" when a storm blew up. Jim also does a song called "Southward", about driving south from Pennsylvania along the coast, and not stopping until he gets to key West. A new song is "Floating Opera", about a boatload of fun people sailing the Chesapeake Bay. I think you can get the drift. Great music to sail by.

Cutting edge water music

I like to listen to Hifty Hifty and the lime squeezers when under heavy sail. I listen to a wild new group called the Calife Carafes when in dock - they are from the Bahamas. A mixture of salsa, african, and east indian voodoo music.
