I have a 12-disk changer on mine and this is what is in a cartridge I always start out with on the boat. I have the same changer in the car so it is easy to swap out and bring in more. Sounds like there are just as many music as boat snobs out there. Appreciating and trying to understand different things is what makes the juke box play folks. Depends on the sailing

When I'm knocked over, dipping the rail and pounding through five to seven footers soaking wet with water spraying back into the cockpit- "cheeseburgers in paradise" just won't cut it on my boat. I need something with a little more edge- Rage works, so does Our Lady Peace, Black Crows Live- (gotta love the guitar work), Tragically Hip, etc.. On those lazy day sails with the wife and kids, you know- the ones when you do more swimming than sailing, you can't beat the island music- Tosh, Lucky Dube, Sattelites (toronto band). At anchor- the wife and I spent the better part of the past two seasons with Dido's "No Angel", but I think Norah Jones will be weighing in heavily this season.

Only one artist to sail to

Without a doubt, the perfect artist to listen to while sailing is Jimmy Buffet. Whether you are eating cheeseburgers on the bow, you are the son of a son of sailer or a pirate looking at 40. Nothing beats the sounds of Buffet on a nice windy day at the lake.Now if you are going to get drunk and.....I prefer something a little more romantic.

Eileen Quinn and Kelly McGuire

We have sort of gotten sick of Buffet although he spins in our CD player regularly. Our current favorites are more light hearted. Since we are Bahama cruisers we love Eileen Quinn's music. It is very specific to cruising topics and the Bahamas. We also love Kelly McGuire's "Redfish Island". Both of these singers have clever and funny lyrics. Chris,Thanks for mentioning Great Big Sea. Love them. Seeing them in concert this weekend. They do a great job of combining rock with traditional sea shanties. Another fun group with a slightly more punk edge, but still some traditional Irish seafaring themes is Flogging Molly. For more traditional sounds, the Saturday Night at Sea CD has all the classic sea shanties. We mix all this in with Buffet, Marley, reggae mixes, rock, 80's. It's all good.

Whatever floats your boat etc.

I enjoy the sound of the wind and water while under way. Dockside or at anchor I like Ottmar Leibert, or something by Naratta or Windom Hill. It seems that Jimmy Buffett has been somewhat overplayed in my neck of the woods. In my Marina I often hear Buffett blaring out of a giant Sea Ray with a drunk on deck wearing gold neck jewelry - It kinda takes away the mood for Jimmy.

Jimmy Buffet is absolutely the one to sail to. And to help it along, I installed a new CD stereo system in my MacGregor 21 last year. Just back from the Miami boat show and a few days in Key West, and Jimmy was in the Z-3 Roadster stereo, also!!! (Key West is definitely the place to be in February!!!)

I love music, but ...

... I never listen to it on the boat. I love the sounds of sailing. I go out there to merge with whatever is happening on the water, and thereby bring peace to my soul. Even at anchor, I'd rather listen to the creak of the boat, the cry of birds, etc. (Parenthetically, I'm puzzled by "listening" to music under way. I often listen to Jimmy, but Eileen Quinn's music wins hands down -- CDs: Degrees of Deviation, Mean Low Water, No Significant Features. You can buy her CDs at www.CDbaby.com or on the Latitudes & Attitudes web site. Some of her music is thoughtful -- you can tell she wrote it on a night watch far from shore. And some of her songs just make us laugh out loud -- My Old Job, Gotta Regatta, Trouble in Paradise, The Anchoring Dance... We can all relate.

While I *do* listen to other music, Jimmy is the standard aboard. My brother introduced me to his music almost 20 years ago and I've never lost my love for his storytelling. Jimmy Buffet can't die soon enough. Sailing is a respite from civilization. I get distracted with too much input. Sailing the slot (SF) with G*d's hammer at work is plenty. If it's too still to make steerage, I heave to and read the paper. I won't even bring talkers.
