Mushroom Vent Location?

Hi Gang, Well, its high time I put in a mushroom vent somewhere in my '72 C27. The question is, with all the wiring, sliding hatch, and foot traffic topsides, where is the best place to put the lil bugger without drilling thru something I should'nt have???? I would like to hear where some of you resolved to put it... thanks Andy S/V Rusten Aweigh Scappoose, Oregon

Ventilation on C27

Hi Andy-- I have an 84 C27, and I've got two of the Nicro Day/Night Solar vents installed. One is located in the forward hatch, and the other is located on the cabin top on the starboard side, between the sliding companionway hatch and the teak handrail. The forward hatch location is an easy one, as it doesn't interfere with anything. The cabintop is a little crowded on a C27 so finding room is a challenge. The Nicro vent fits between the sliding hatch and the handrail ok, although my main halyard and mainsheet do touch the vent itself. Not a real problem, though. I used to run one vent on "intake" and the other on "exhaust", but later switched them both to "exhaust", as I found the cabin to be fresher, and cooler, this way. (I have a passive louvered vent in the companionway hatch boards, plus, in the heat of the summer, I leave one or both of the smaller hatches in the cabintop open by about a 1/4" for extra fresh air. Where ever you install, make sure to seal the fiberglass well so moisture doesn't enter, and seal the joint between the fiberglass and vent itself, so rainwater doesn't drip into your cabin. Randy

Advice REcieved

Thanks for the advice. I pulled off my handrails because I was always getting my big feet stuck between them and the cabin door when going top sides. I have a 72 tall rig, so she is a foot narrower than the later years models... I also unfortunately have a plexiglass forward hatch. , so dont think my stainless steel mushroom vent would live very long in that, but I could be wrong. have to give that some more thought...

Sorry for the delay. The location of my vent is about 24 inches aft of your can. My boat has a narrower companionway hatch, leaving sufficient room for the vent. Yours doesn't appear wide enough there. Perhaps with the hand rails removed it would be. I am not sure about mounting the vent in the plexiglass forward hatch. It may work if the right sealant is used (some attack plastics, so seek knowledgable advice). On my 84, the forward hatch is located in the sloped section at the very front of the cabin, whereas yours is located a bit aft, in the horizontal part just in front of the mast. Since the sloped section is unused, you may wish to mount one there. Good luck, and let us know how you make out. Randy
