Nothing is ever so bad that it can't get worse.

I always liked the corollary: Anything demonstrated for the repairman will work perfectly.

Locke's Law

My friend named Tim Locke postulated this one:

For every home repair, take the estimated number of hours or days required...then square that number for the real time.

Then divide the larger number by 2 to equal the required number of trips to the hardware store to complete the job.

An estimated 4-hour job is really a 16-hour job. And it'll take 8 trips to the store to finish the project.

Unfortunately, Locke's Law applies to most boat projects. Except, of course, that the hardware store is even farther away than a home project.

Since owning a sailboat, I have noticed that no matter how small you think the chance is that a rope or sail will get hung up on the smallest thing, its almost guaranteed to happen every time...
What law does that fall under?

This is sooo true!

What law does that fall under?

Murphy's fifth law is the most important unusually the most broken.

The same law that states that every piece of sailboat hardware will cost at least twice what you think it should.

Having been a witness to it, no one can tie a knot as tight or complicated as a flogging sail.

Murphy's Law(s)
If you like something, they will quit making it.
If a friend helps it will take twice as long.
The time it takes to paint a house is in direct proportion to the number of cases of beer available.
After the store is closed you will be one short of whatever it is you need for the repair.

Parkinson's first law: You always fill the available space. (How true when you own a sailboat)

Spencer Tracy's law: Get there on time, know your lines, don't trip over the furniture, take your paycheck, and run like hell.

Cole's law: Shredded cabbage.;)

You can fool some of the people all of time, and all of the peope some of the time, but you can't fool Mom! Abe's Mama.

HUMPTY DUMPTY WAS PUSHED!!

I once had a Chem Prof who spoke of "O'shea's Law" which, simply stated: "Murphy was an optimist"...

If you know Clausewitz you will recognize that he forgot the following when H wrote "on war" 14 and 15 are always applicable.

  1. Indecision is the key to flexibility
  2. Nothing spurs adaptability like the lack of planing
  3. The joy of success is merely the remission of failure
  4. The facts, although interesting, are irrelevant
  5. The deliberate application of terror is an effective form of strategic communication
  6. Success occurs in private but failure occurs in full view of the public
  7. All things being equal, fat people use more soap
  8. Planning assumptions are just another way of saying you have no idea what is occurring around you
  9. Every time you link ways and means, the ways will move and the means will be allocated to someone else
  10. One decent course of action is always better than 3 grubby ones
  11. There is always one more idiot in the group than you planned for
  12. Never wrestle with a pig, you both get dirty and the pig enjoys it
  13. Those who live by the sword tend to get shot by those who don't
  14. No plan is fool proof when executed by a sufficiently demented fool
  15. Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it most
  16. There is plenty of time to be spontaneous tomorrow
  17. Half the people you know are below average
  18. You can tell which way the train went by staring at the tracks
  19. Friends may come and go but enemies accumulate
  20. Sometimes too much to drink is not enough

Some application here too:

  • You are not a superman.
  • If it's stupid but works, it's not stupid.
  • Don't look conspicuous, it draws fire.
  • When in doubt, empty your magazine.
  • Never share a foxhole with anyone braver than you are.
  • Remember: Your weapon was made by the lowest bidder.
  • If your attack is going really well, it's an ambush.
  • No plan survives the first contact intact.
  • All 5-second grenade fuses will burn out in 3.
  • Try to look unimportant. The enemy may be low on ammo.
  • If you are forward of your position the artillery will always fall short.
  • The important things are always hard.
  • The simple things are always simple.
  • The easy way is always hard.
  • If you are short of everything except enemy, you're in combat.
  • When you have secured an objective, don't forget to let the enemy know about it.
  • Incoming fire has the right of way.
  • If the enemy is in range, SO ARE YOU.
  • No combat ready unit ever passed inspection.
  • Beer math: two beers times 37 men equals 49 cases.
  • Body count math: two guerillas plus one portable plus two pigs equals 37 enemy KIA.
  • Things that must be together to work usually can't be shipped together.
  • Radios will fail as soon as you need fire support desperately.
  • Anything you do can get you shot, including doing nothing.
  • Tracers work both ways.
  • The only thing more accurate than incoming enemy fire is incoming friendly fire.
  • Make it tough for the enemy to get in and you can't get out.
  • If you take more than your fair share of objectives, you will have more than your fair share of objectives to take.
  • When both sides are convinced that they are about to lose, they are both right.
  • Professional soldier are predictable, but the world is full of amateurs.
  • Murphy was a Green Beret.

My definition of "Boat Math":

"When you start with 10 projects, after you've completed 5 of them you'll find that you still have 8 projects left."
