The muffler on my 1983 30' Hunter is spraying water. A smallish, but steady stream that the bilge pumpm can handle, but water supposed to be outside the boat. Anyone with experience changing out these beasts....they sitting below the platform holding the hot water tank and fuel tank. Is ir accessible from the port side quarterberth is the plywood panel to engine compartment/hotwater tank is, perhaps, slit from top to bottom and only an aft section removed? I thik there are two bolts/clamps holdig down the muffler, but only the more forward seems to be accessible through the engine (sliding in/overt the engine to reach it. The rear clamp and rear of mullfler itself, I can't see. Anyone? Please, it's sailing season. Thanks in advance. Jerry Bushee SV Bodacious

anyone for marinetex?

This may stem the leak until you can replace the muffler.

Sure, but

Your opinion is shared by a couple local captains and I agree it's much better than buying all new fixins'ure and its wonderful stuff (used it on the crankcase of a 1965 Norton 650cc motorcycle a few eons ago), but how do I get it to the leak? Access seems to be the issue.

My experience

I replaced the entire exhaust system on my 1980 H30 some years ago. If it's that old and is leaking, you might as well replace all the hoses. The most difficult part was getting the exhaust hose free from the mixing elbow. I undid the hose clamps where the final exhaust hose was attached to the stern thru hull and pulled the entire exhaust system, in one piece, (engine hose, muffler and exhaust hose) forward and over the engine and out. The muffler on my boat was not bolted or strapped down and was just resting on a wooden board under the platform that holds the batteries and fuel tank. The original muffler was a SS, water-lock muffler with a 2" inlet and outlet. That muffler is no longer manufactured, but a Primex fiberglass replacement was purchased (in 1997) from Marine Mufflers, part Number MC2. Call 407-886-1144, or contact Hunter Marine for advice. I assembled a new system, using the old parts for size and just slid it back over the engine and into place. You can get some access to the rear of the muffler as well as the rudder tube, by removing the panel at the aft end of the port quarter berth. I had my teenage son climb into the starboard lazarette locker to help with some of the hoses as well. My boat also had a removable panel in the cockpit sole but you would have to hang by your toes to reach anything.
