I want to buy a cheaper MP3 player and speakers that will run on 12vdc.

Can I ask what others are using? I see some players for $50-$75, but have not looked at speakers/docikng stations.

Thanks!

We use the WM marine stereo. with 4 speakers and using the fader we can either have music in the cockpit or the salon or both. It has a usb cable for playing geek sticks. Also has AM, FM, CD, and an aux jack. $200

When my stereo unit died I found a Best Buy AM/FM/CD on close-out. It was the same unit sold by some of the Marine Outfitters. It has the Aux plug for the Ipod and a USB plug to a)charge the Ipod or b)burn some songs to a small thumb drive. Best $75 boat bucks I've spent.

I found a Sony auto stereo unit with a built in iPod bay. I just did a direct swap with the existing stereo unit. I think I paid under $80 for it.

I have one of these and love it, even with the old speakers that came on the boat it still sounds great. The FM is good and MP3 is excellent.
Also takes MP4 and if you're playing music off a smart phone, the player mutes when you get a call and rings through the speakers.

merlinuxo - that PolyPlanar unit you linked to looks interesting, especially at like $66. I can't tell if it is an entire system, or for $66 you get only the unit that is the "base" and have to also buy separately the thing they call the RD44 display. It looks like you mount an "in dash" type base unit (the CD player?) in a rectangular hole and then mount that display nearby and connect with the DIN cable - is that right? Thanks.

Hi Peter,
Yes, that is how it goes and IIRC that cable is 10' long.
The system includes the display, the amp/CD unit and all the wiring except speaker wires. I mounted the CD part into the top of a cabinet just under the side deck, above the sliding doors where it is out of the way and the display just inside the companionway where I can get to it without going below.
I was amazed at how good this system is for the money.

Just ordered one...

Thanks for the tips - tough part on the H23 will be where to mount the CD unit part.

I did find it about $ 15 or so less at signalmarine.com, after you add the shipping.

Great price! Speakers are cheaper too.
Using a oscillating multifunction tool (Fein knock off from Harbor Frieght) I was able to cut a rectangle for the CD unit within an inch of the liner under the deck. Might be able to do something with it inside a cabinet. The display controls this unit so access isn't important unless you want to play CDs :).

This signalmarine outfit is pretty good - I ordered it yesterday and it is supposed to come in UPS today - now, I am in Philadelphia and they are in NJ, so I was lucky.

The H23 doesn't really have any cabinets, except maybe where the sink and stove are. More than likely I will have to craft some sort of panel or box and mount it on or under one of the shelves, for the CD part. The display bracket will probably mount on top of a shelf, or maybe near the electrical panel - I'll have to eyeball it.

Now I have to find speakers that'll fit somewhere.

I have a fairly inexpensive Boss Marine CD/AM/FM with an "audio in" jack for my MP3 player. This is mounted with speakers in the cabin. BUT..... what I actually use most is my MP3 player or smart phone plugged into a small portable battery powered speaker "cube". The speaker "cube" is about 3"X3"X2" and cost me $10 and Big Lots. I stick both into a small built-in 12" X 4" recessed storage area in my H-26's cockpit coming. The recessed storage actually serves as an amplifier/megaphone and it actually sounds pretty good.... and is easy to get to. BrianW

Peter,
I have old 6x9s that a PO made wooden boxes for that are screwed to the bulkheads at the heads of the quarter berths. I'm replacing these with marine box speakers so I don't have to cut big holes anywhere. Signalmarine has great prices on these, thanks.

I ended up with a refurbished Kenwood KDC-248U and the West Marine 6.5" two way's. Sounds good. MOjnted teh radio in the sink box facing the step. Sink box slides back and radio clears everything. Speakers are mounted on the side bunk frame walls int eh middle.
